Sovereignty of Taiwan's outlying islands?

Will it ever get to mainland China threatening Taiwan militarily by holding onto Kinmen or Matsu?

No.

sovereignty?

who even holds the sovereignty to the island of Taiwan itself?

That’s why there needs to be an amendment on the national constitution that was passed on 1949. Taiwan has the right to withdraw itself from any association with the mainland. Why doesn’t the CCP go claim lost lands from Russia or Mongolia? Those seem like easier targets militarily.

Typo. 1947. And martial law was lifted exactly 40 years later.

that’s simple… the commies always like to pick on weaklings… The CCP needed the USSR’s support in order to create the PRC. It’s the ultimate ass-kissing and the PRC didn’t have(and still don’t) have the balls to ask Russia to give them back. (too late now)

Back in 1960, JFK didn’t seem to think it would be very helpful to defend them or very harmful to abandon them.

the same JFK who authorized the Bay of Pigs Invasion?

then again the one debating him, Nixon, cut all formal ties with the ROC government.

Richard Nixon was actually Ma’s godfather. Little known fact!

An independent Taiwan would make the country an attractive destination for economic investors and potential migrants from the mainland. Taiwan’s economy could expand if the place turned into an offshore banking haven and a reformed skilled immigration program could solve declining birth rates. It won’t be much longer before the CCP loses control over the mainland, especially in the autonomous regions. It’s like the U.S.S.R. all over again. None of the former Soviet states rejoined Russia even after the later adopted a democracy.

Yeah, that one.

That very man.

That’s great, but the majority of Taiwanese don’t support formal independence. The question you should be asking is not why Taiwan doesn’t declare independence, but why the people don’t want it to.

^ Easily, the answer always points back to China. China and missiles. However, I think the younger generation aren’t afraid unlike the older generation. This is why they’re louder and prouder of Taiwan.

Typo. latter. That could change within a generation
