As a Taiwanese American, I’ve been told that my pinky toe nails are split in half because of… well, many variety of reasons. Some say it has to do with mongol blood, some say it’s a sign that I am a descendant Pinpu Aboriginals. Whatever the reason, I just know everyone in my family has split pinky toe nails.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s where both my pinky toe nails are split vertically down almost the middle, so I effectively have 2 separate nails on one toe. when I was young, I thought they were split because perhaps I jammed my toe against the table leg too hard or something. But I guess they are genetic?

Anyway, since most people here aren’t Asian, just curious if this occurs to non-Taiwanese or non-Asians. Or if you don’t have have it personally, have you seen others with it?

Just found out it has a name, accessory nail…

I thought that would be something like:

I have accessory nails on the fifth toe and I’m white.

I’ve always wondered what’s the point of having that extra piece of nail… they only serve to create random torments when they get caught on socks, or jammed against something…

I have that too, and I’m about as white as you can get (ancestors from Sweden and Ireland). And you’re right, it gets so annoying if I haven’t clipped it and it gets caught on something.

Speaking of body traits along racial lines, I’ve heard that Asians tend to have ‘dry’ earwax, while Caucasians have ‘wet’ earwax. It’s true in my case; how about you, hansioux?

unless I just went swimming or something, my ear wax is about as dry as they come. They are pretty much powdery if I ever pick my ears.

Isn’t it interesting that the wikipedia entry for it says some claims people of Han Chinese descent would have this trait? and here just a simply poll busts that myth.
