Sport or Dualie?

Hi, I recently relocated to HK, and am planning on getting a bike.

I had previously owned a Honda F3 which I really liked and got to ride the awesome roads in California as well as Thunderhill.

I was planning on getting a Kawi 636 (the least expensive of the 600s, but an awesome bike no less).

BUT, the other day, I saw a dualie (KLN?) in HK. It looks really fun. Now I’m wondering if it’s better suited for riding in HK overall. There’s plenty of nice roads in HK for sure, but to share the roads with HK drivers doesn’t give me a good feeling, at least not until I’m in more remote parts. Would a dualie be different? Are there places I can go to take it on the trail (legally) in HK?

Any suggestions would help.

Also, I’m gonna try and convert my CA M1 license to a HK license. Anyone got experience with that.

Lastly, excuse me for posting this here since it’s not Taiwan strictly speaking.

get the dualie, street motard - KTM

single cylinder, lighter, more upright seating, same 17 inch street tires, no need to wring its neck to get into the ideal powerband.

I second that. Get a motard. Especially for HK, where most of the roads are tight twisties or traffic clogged city streets. Sports bikes are fun for awhile, but will get tiresome after a few months, especially in Asia. If it were back in the states it would definitely be a sports bike, but not in Asia, I’ve learned my lesson.

I have no idea what type of vehicle you people are discussing.

A “dualie” is a large pick-up truck with 4 rear wheels & tires. Thus…‘dual’ wheels & tires on each side.

And when I Googled an image for a “motard” I got this

.

Is there some secret language being spoken?

Right. dual sport. Exactly as in TC’s photo.

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

I see Kawi sells the Versys KLN650 ($HK80k) and Suzuki’s got the very popular DRZ-400SM ($HK50k). Any recommendations? Never been on a Dualie (you’re getting old TC). bah, does that mean I shouldn’t be wearing my street boots (ie get the MX boots, but still concrete roads??)

OTH, HK roads, small and twisty, won’t that be more fun for a street bike. Maybe not a 600, but perhaps a 400.

any help great appreciated.

I think it would be a whole lot more bike than the DRZ-400, even though I’ve heard the latter’s nice as well. The Versys’s engine is basically the same as the Ninja 650’s, but detuned a little for better midrange – obviously nice in HK with all that city riding. It’s not a true dual-purpose bike, though, and I think you could only do mild offroading on it.

Yes, each day I get older. And for that I am thankful.
I also speak American english.

Google on ‘Dualie’.

Anyway…good luck in your search and purchase decision.

MX boots and knee scrapers…

saw one (a KTM) here over yang ming shan the other day with slick tyres! big fat michelins. hope they carried a hot knife for some quick hand-grooving when it started to rain…

Oh man, I just saw the ad for the ER-6f (the equivalent of the 650R), and now I’m thinking sport bike again. So here are my top choices in no order:

  1. Kawi ZX6R

  2. Kawi ER-6F

  3. Kawi KLR650A (Versys)

  4. Suzuki DRZ400SM

Help! I can’t decide. PS they’re all about 60k-70k HKD except for the 6R (80k)

Has anyone ridden on HK roads to get a feel for what might be suitable. I see the roads are all very well maintained.

Similar to the Ninja 650 (which as you say is another name for the ER-6F), but taller and with slightly more midrange power, at the expense of a little top end power which wouldn’t be incredibly useful anyway in HK I imagine.

Oh snap! There’s also an Aprilia RS125 for about the same price (60k)(though I read that 125s can blow out easier if you do certain things). Damn, I wish I could just try them all out. Thanks Joe. I will definitely have to go see the Versys and sit on it (if they let me), but also at that price, it’s not much difference with a 6R.

If I were going to get a decent motorbike which I wouldn’t end up dropping at every red light, I think I’d go for a Suzuki Bandit 650. I’ve read some good things about it. Decent midrange, great around town, good for some touring too, and it has ABS. Maybe it would be too boring for you, though.
