Steven Erikson, Malazan Book of the Fallen series

Any of you fellow fantasy nerds (or fantasy non-nerds, as in my case) out there read this series?

At first I wasn’t liking it. Somehow I plodded through. Got the second book as a gift, read it for lack of other free books, got hopelessly hooked, and re-read the first book, which I now like as well.

Hmm…
Anyway, would be glad to share opinions of the story if you’ve read it.

Hmm, well I guess either nobody’s read it, or else didn’t think much of it.

However, if you’re looking for a new fantasy series to get into, I do recommend this one. The thing I like about it is that there aren’t heroes and villains per se. The stories are quite complex, with a large number of lovingly filled-out characters whose lives are interwoven in various important and trivial ways.

The author overdoes the cliffhanger/miraculous rescue scenario; on the other hand, his characters actually can die - which adds nicely to the tension. Also, he doesn’t spoonfeed you information. You have to glean it a little at a time – which I find refreshingly respectful of the reader’s intelligence.

The books can be found (overpriced) at Page One in the 101.
