Sumi Sushi

If you’re a fan of California rolls and American style japanese fare of the like, I finally tried this little place in lane 248 on Zhongxiao E Rd, Section 4 last Friday night. Just a tiny place with bar seating for maybe ten at the most, I was pretty impressed with what was on offer. Chef Andy and his wife are welcoming, friendly and will recomend dishes based on ingredients you may be fond of. Having relocated from Vancouver to Taiwan because he felt it important for his children to learn chinese and understand their heritage, Andy brings his experience as a restaurant owner in Canada back to his birthplace with fresh ingredients, innovative styling and a very friendly smile all at a very affordable price (dinner for two was just a little over nt$1000 w/beer). Strongly recommend Philadelphia rolls made with Philadelphia cream cheese, of course. They have a selection of japanese beer and sake on the menu as well, so both your taste buds and thirst will be satisfied.

That DOES look good!

My wife and I lunched here today and it was really quite good. Its a nice, different addition to the sushi that’s available everywhere else in Taipei.

The owner and his wife are very nice and the sushi is very fresh and tasty. Here’s the owner’s blog: sumisushi.pixnet.net/blog

Sumi Sushi is just down the lane from Toasteria, Mary’s, Alleycats and Yuma… Instead of turning the corner to go to Yuma, just keep going and Sumi Sushi is on the left hand side at the corner (catty-corner from Yuma).

I’ll definitely be going back!

The rolls were awesome! A nice change of pace from all the toocoolforschool sushi in greater Taipei. Place is tiny though so I would recommend a reservation!

Back again last night. This place is really good and a great value. They have some seating downstairs now, but be aware that this is a two person operation; expect to be patient if you are there on Friday or Saturday between 7-9pm. Had to laugh at the dude sitting next to me at the bar who sat there for 20 minutes waiting for his dinner partner to arrive and then couldn’t stop chirping about how hungry he was once she did and the place was a bit busier; I would have ordered a pre-game roll on the sly, if I were him. Hats off to Andy and his wife for being cool, cordial and friendly with lots of smiles throughout.

Quick note on Sumi Sushi: they’ve moved to the Ximending area, new address 台北市萬華區漢口街二段53巷17號 (I think - it’s pretty hard to make out on their blog/website). English version No. 17, Lane 53, Section 2 Hankou Street, but for me the Chinese address gives a good result with Google Maps, whereas the English one is very inaccurate.

I haven’t eaten at the new location yet, but I ate at the old branch a few months ago and really enjoyed it - as Citizen K says, it’s the “North American” style sushi rolls that are a bit harder to get here. And there are a number of vegetarian options as well.
