SYM Fighter

I am thinking of getting a new ('08 carburetor model) fighter. Does anyone have any recent experience with one?
I know there is an old thread viewtopic.php?f=75&t=59459
but I was hoping for some more recent experiences.

Thanks

Not a bad bike, a copy of the yamaha cygnus with fewer aftermarket parts for it.
Whats your budget, i would recommend a yamaha cygnus over the fighter and i swear they are similar money.

On that note the price should be around the 40’s no higher than 50 for an 08.

the cheapest price I found for a new fighter is $61k, do you know where I can find it cheaper in Kaohsiung?

I tried test driving both (used ones, 2007 I think) and I thought the fighter was more powerful and more comfortable (more leg room). The lowest price for the Cygnus I saw was $69k.

Thats new right?.
Kind expensive, i payed 55k for my BWS125 brand new… thats usually 72k!.

You can look online to ruten.com.tw/

But i think the price is similar 50-60 thousand. Are you looking to 125 or 150cc?

I am looking for a 150, ruten was were I found the price I listed. Don’t think there are any 08’ 125s left. Is there any discernible difference?

I saw the new BWS and checked it out but I found it to be very uncomfortable (the foot space was designed in such a way that it forces me to sit with my legs at 90 degrees and the handlebars are too low so they knocked my knees). According to my mechanic the price is so low now because they produced too many and not selling enough. He said the leg space is too small and there is almost no storage space.

You can check with a SYM dealer if there are ant 125cc left. I just bought a Kymco for my wife 2008 model brand new 2 months ago and the dealer bring it for us. They keep some on display, cheaper models but for higher models like Fighter, you can ask them to check with the factory if any in stock and wait 1 or 2 days to have it shipped in if available. You can negotiate a bottom price for it too. We bought the GP125 with disc brake for 51,000 including 1 year theft insurance (covering 30,000NTD), 2 year insurance. We bargain for quite a while and asked 3 shops close to us. You need to push very hard to get discounts.

For BWS, my feet doesn’t feel comfortable and Yamaha’s have very small storage under the seat so i passed on Yamaha.

I bought the Sym Fighter 150cc last year in April (2008 model) with front Disc brake, anti theft insurance (1 year) plus the basic 2 years insurance for around 68K~70K (not too sure…need to check the receipts again)…the actual price was around 64K I think…but now the prices have increased due to an increase in the price of raw materials.

I had 2 choices in mind…the Sym Fighter or the Yamaha Cygnus 125cc…but after test driving a brand new Cygnus which my friend bought…I decided to go for the Sym Fighter as I didn’t like the Cygnus’ power and acceleration and it felt like it was too “rough”…not a smooth ride. My brother, who also rode both the Cygnus and Fighter, said the same thing.

I would recommend you go for the Fighter 150cc…great scooter, awesome power  , nice stability and handling, lots of leg space and storage space. Since the 125cc and the 150cc doesn’t have much of a price difference (5K~6K), it would be better to opt for the 150cc.

If you must go for the SYM, please save the cash and get the 125cc version.
The only difference is the piston size, you can just add the big bore kit to the 125cc for about 3000-5000nt installed, it would be faster too.

the yamaha gt-r is also a nice pick. i grabbed my '08 brand new for 55k, perfect size, fun scooter

best bikes:

RS100
RSZ100
CUXI100
GTR125
CYGNUS125
BWS125

Its well known yamahas are the best, you may not like the way it rides, but about a billion people would argue with you that your wrong

Heres a PERFECT example of how popular they really are, 90% of the bikes here are yamaha (excluding the geared ones)

Well, I still have my Fighter. It’s a good scoot, but after having had a car turn in front of me - even after repairs, it’s just not the same. The whole head of the bike seems loose like it’s about to fall off - and no amount of tightening or parts changing seems to be fixing that.

Yamaha GTR125 is nice too. Sisinlaw’s boyfriend bought one and is very happy with it.

I am not in any way arguing that Yamahas are bad, but Yamaha Taiwan and Yamaha Japan are different. All of the Yamaha scooters we see (here and around the world) are designed and made in Taiwan. Some parts are produced in Japan (fuel pump for example). If you are comparing Yamaha Japan motorcycles with Sym scooters then there would be no contest. But in the scooter market I think it is all a matter of opinion.
In other parts of the world the fighter has been getting better reviews than it Yamaha competitors.

bum, pretty cool video. is that in Taipei? also what was the music?

If my wife wasn’t going to ride it mostly, i was going to buy fighter. Kymco racing is another model i looked but the price and headlights make me walk away.

where did those facts come from?
All yamaha scooters are made in taiwan, including japanese ones… they moved the whole scooter manufactering to taiwan years ago!.
The fuel pumps are made in china though, i know as i checked last week!.

Yamaha taiwan is better than all of the other players on the market, hard to swallow i know but after wasting money and spending a few years in the industry you will learn that.
GTR125 is indeed a good bike, i prefer the cygnus with its 12’’ wheels though.

I bought my SYM Fighter 150cc second hand two years ago for NT$55k. It was second hand because the previous owner got into financial difficulties and couldn’t make the payments after three months. I’ve had no problems whatsoever and the bike has been absolutely awesome.
I’ve seen the Cygnus and it looks similar. From time to time you’ll get a scooter punk who wants to have a go from the lights and my Fighter always beats them on the pull away (Probably flat out also, but I’m not about to go racing down city streets to prove that!).

Last weekend I drove down to Kenting with it and it drove like a dream and kept up with cars all the way. No problems doing 90 - 100 on an uphill, with room left for more acceleration. And it felt stable and handled well.

Never been sorry I bought it.

If I remember right, mine was around NT$60k new a couple years ago, and and I did have some regrets in the first couple of months after buying it (both engineering & production quality problems). Admittedly though, after that first couple months, it’s been a reliable scoot.

Performance-wise, I don’t know if Bismark’s is modified, or I got a lemon (I suspect the latter), but mine only does well (with room for acceleration) up to around 85 on a mild hill. It will go up to 100, but it needs a bit of a longer flat stretch to build up to that speed.

Not modified AFAIK. My problem is generally going too fast, so I have to watch the speedo’.
