Taipei City Council candidate assaulted

Added charge of election interference maybe?

Yeah in the article it also says cops tried to determine whether he was with a gang or with a specific political affiliation. Seems reasonable to investigate that angle to at least exclude the possibility.

The politician may see an uptick in votes though.

I disagree. I don’t care if he a psychopath or a saint, if he woke up on the wrong side of the bed or if she said a mean word to him. He hit her. If it happens all the time, that’s not any better, is it? He hit her. Maybe he likes it, maybe he’s crying now. Unless she physically threatened him in some immediate way, I don’t care. He hit her.

Yes, I get it. I was merely pointing out that he isn’t necessarily a gang member, a psychopath, or a staunch supporter of the opposition. He might just be an ordinary guy whose bullshit buffer had just run out. I was further pointing out that politicians should make a little bit more effort to stop shovelling bullshit on people’s heads, just in case one particular shovelful hits someone like that at the wrong angle. At worst, they’d make the world a slightly nicer (more peaceful) place if they’d just STFU. At best, they might avert this kind of assault.

Intoxicated people can be aggressive without reason.

Fair enough. I’m not saying he is either. Sometimes people snap for trivial reasons, true. I just hope people will understand how damaging even seemingly minor violent acts can be, and that they will have to take responsibility for them.

And being half drunk, half hung over in the morning gives you a really low tolerance for loud noises.

I can’t imagine he’ll get away with it. If any possible good comes out of it, it might raise public awareness of the fact that punching someone can have extremely serious repercussions. There was a spate of this sort of thing in the US in 2020, IIRC - people were doing it for fun and filming it. More than one person died. As a result, the American public now has a pretty good understanding of what happens if you fall and hit your head.

I’m old school. He sucker punched a woman. Unacceptable. No further discussion on my part.

Punching a woman is not what ordinary guys do. He isnt an ordinary guy.

I’d have to side by him

“Ordinary guys” have done far, far worse than that all throughout history. It merely requires the right circumstances to make it happen. You or I would do exactly the same thing if someone pushed the correct buttons in the correct sequence.

It’s comforting to believe the only people who do bad things are bad people. It’s true some of the time, but not all of the time.

Anyway, I’m sure the newspapers will have some lurid stories for us if it turns out he is a habitual woman-beater.

Why is it so important the the punch-bag was a woman? If it were a man, would the uproar be as rabid?

Nah

哪裡will he be locked up? i see a lot of bu hao yi si on his side , some apples sent to the hospital, stories how he is actually a good kid and then maybe a slap on the wrist.

"It is a frightening thought that man also has a shadow side to him, consisting not just of little weaknesses and foibles, but of a positively demonic dynamism.

The individual seldom knows anything of this; to him, as an individual, it is incredible that he should ever in any circumstances go beyond himself. But let these harmless creatures form a mass, and there emerges a raging monster; and each individual is only one tiny cell in the monster’s body, so that for better or worse he must accompany it on its bloody rampages and even assist it to the utmost.

Having a dark suspicion of these grim possibilities, man turns a blind eye to the shadow-side of human nature."

This loonie clocked a lady on the street, what because she was making noise? I don’t think so.

How do you know she’s a “lady”? She could just be a normal woman without an aristocratic title.

Lady isn’t a term of respect in the U.S. In fact, it’s often an insult.

No, that wasn’t the reason. She just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time doing the wrong thing (and let’s be clear about this: if any of us stood outside a police station making a godawful racket, they’d tell us to fuck off or risk arrest).

The fact that he was almost certainly sane makes it worse, IMO. If it turns out he’s a “loony”, well, different story.
