A lady attacks on the Metro (MRT to elders), but people help out to take her down! Seems much better than before when people would just run away. (Does it seem more Metro problems/crime, or just better media coverage?)
From my understanding, one of the person helping was an off-duty cop. I think this makes it easier for others to help if one person runs forward first and take initiative
That’s just the TRTC’s regulations, not a “law” in itself, so I think not “illegal” per se:
What is the consequence of those who violate the “Regulations for Use of the Taipei Metro System”?
The TRTC may refuse to provide transport services to persons in breach of the above regulations. Passengers in violation of the penal provisions of the Mass Rapid Transit Act or Taipei Rapid Transit System Directions for Passenger Transportation Services are punishable by law, and the TRTC or police may demand them to leave Taipei Metro premises. No refund will be made on fares for uncovered journeys.

NT$10,000 to no more than NT$1 million:
In the event of any of the following circumstances, a fine of at least NT$10,000 but no more than NT$1 million shall be imposed:
Carrying materials announced as hazardous or flammable into the routes, depots, stations, or vehicles of a mass rapid transit system without permission.

This is assuming that pocket knives fall under “materials announced as hazardous or flammable” under the Mass Rapid Transit Act, which I don’t think is a given — that looks to be more talking about chemicals, explosives, and flammable stuff, though it may just be a poor translation.
I can’t see someone getting fined NT$1 million (or even NT$10,000) for a small pocket knife, anyway… unless they’ve done something else that makes carrying the knife a secondary issue to that (like attacking someone).
I’d either bust out some of my ninja moves, hide behind an old lady, or leg it depending on the situation. I guess it’s hard to know without being there.
I also don’t use the MRT enough to much care about having free rides for life, so TRTC would need to up its rewards policy if they want me running in there like Steven Seagal in the 1990s to sort shit out for them.
The 2014 fatal attack by that psycho boy, showed the most success was people using Umbrellas to keep him on a distance. A long umbrella gives you the reach to try to stay out of harms way
I’ve little idea about self defence, even if this is a bit different situation, but yes I guess you react by …well, by what? Reflex, training, instinct, guesswork. Having some sort of “weapon” (umbrella, bag, helmet) seems a good help. Get support from other passenger
I confronted someone try to steal from me on the street, the guy ran away (Italy), wonder would person in Taiwan also run away if you yelled at them. Maybe not best thing to do, but i was not happy. But still I would try help out in Taiwan (some other countries maybe not)
