From the Taipei Time article linked above:

The task force is focusing the investigation on the motive behind the attacks and the chemical composition of the powder used, he said.

A police source commenting on condition of anonymity identified the chain as Chuang Chia Pan (莊家班) sesame oil chicken restaurants.

Gambling debts of someone connected to the chain are being explored, the source said.

is gambling even allowed in taiwan???

Not legally (besides the government lottery and sports betting) but it’s very common.

Food being tampered with is like one of biggest fears.

Hopefully it was just something like laxatives or chili powder, and nothing too harmful or disgusting.

Reminds me of the Tylenol poisonings in the US in the early 80s. Several people died and it caused quite a panic, so this is indeed scary. The crazy thing is that in the US case they never found the perpetrator, and it resulted in major safety changes in packaging.

I thought it was peta or something

I will predict it will be far worse than that. Based on what I’ve heard, these debt collectors play hardball.

But thankfully I haven’t heard of anyone being reported as sick which one would think would’ve happened by now.

How are you supposed to get money from someone by destroying his business…the way he would get money to pay :joy:

I think the point here is that the gangsters are NOT getting the money and want to try to destroy whatever is left for the person in debt. :slightly_frowning_face:

Not this time.

Its hard to be food vendor, like this small food shop in Taipei boss gets ambushed

I wonder why the Media didn’t put their nationalities on full and prominent display. How am I supposed to know if they’re Indian or white wolves?

Surely they aren’t Taiwanese. Taiwanese people would never do this.

No they do this to scare the business owners into paying, as the debts aren’t legally enforceable so the mafia enforces debt collections with violence.

If it was legally enforceable debts the court could seize assets.

It’s probably a 富二代 of one of the owners, which could be a large group. Happened to a friend of the wife. One of her uncles by marriage is in real estate development. His son had a a gambling issue, they splashed red paint on new properties that were for sale.

So if it went this far, I doubt this is the persons first issue with gambling debts when 3 people did this so publicly. Maybe Dad/uncle is tired of covering the debts.

Reminds me of a friend who had gangster problems. He opened a 3C store with two partners who borrowed money. When the store closed the two partners left town…meaning my friend was left to pay back the money lenders. My friend opened a restaurant and the lenders sent two guys to wait outside the restaurant every day when he closed. So every day he would put money in a bag and give to them. If I remember right took him 3 years to pay them off.
