My wife and I recently moved from Seattle/US to Taitung where my wife has family and we plan on spending a good portion of our retirement. We both speak English & Chinese. We’re looking for any community activities or groups, either local, foreign/expat, or a mixture. Would love to also hear about any classes or activities, e.g. Calligraphy lessons, Badminton, Hiking, possibly book clubs, etc. Much obliged for any info!
There is a second hand bookstore near Andong that has speeches etc. Taitung has a lot of more arts, crafts, market style cultures, the county government is also real big on spending in these industries.
Aboriginal related and DIY related, taitung has a fairly large amount of promotion for.
Posting now so I can search and remember, I will post the name a bit later. It’s escaping me at the moment.
It’s a hot spring area in the coastal mountain range, located between the town of Yuli in the valley and the smaller community of Changbin along the coast.
EDIT: Evidently the at-times cryptic @Explant meant something else. Perhaps some day I too will understand his enigmatic posts.
Hehe. It’s a company that is surrounded with basic shops, tool shops, nursery, baby animals etc. It’s a place to buy things. Sorry, my phone only has the mandarin alphabet and I can’t type in mandarin worth sh*t. I’ll write the names properly when my wife has time to type it haha. Apologies.
Also check out the government places, they often fund such classes and projects in. Taitung. My guess is proportionally more than most other places in Taiwan. Very much tourism and local business oriented. So there are loads of info available in print. Hello Taitung. I think that’s the name. There are so many pamphlets, articles, magazines etc in taitung.
One of those things. Seems like nothing. Then once one meets a few friends, the flood gates open.
Edit. Wife is not entirely impressed I’m on the phone haha, she’s doing end of year accounting and taxes. So, here is the screenshot. I should of done this from the get go. My bad.
Hi Hi Taitung possibly? seems to be about austronesian culture as opposed to events, but the Taitung Art Museum has posters, booklets and flyers for events info.
*Looks like the museum is between shows right now and I don’t know if the gallery lobby is open.
I haven’t really checked these out but this is an arts and activities group
It’s moreso that one can network with such groups and broaden their scope. Given the person is interested in a broad group of things, best bet is go chat with people and groups that are involved with and/or organizing events. The community is all connected, Taiwan is a tiny country. One of those things, it seems boring and dry, and once one meets some friends suddenly there is a class, lecture, event, etc every hour it seems.
Taiwan also isn’t amazing at internet and marketing in my opinion. Still very much a social in person culture that uses digital to help spread word. I love it. But for best results, go out and sit down and spend time. After some time with various organizers, one might have more options than they can shake a stick at.
Thank you! I haven’t visited FB in probably over 15 years, so just created a new account and will be checking out your recommended links.
My wife and I have what we call our “rustic beach house” in Jia Lu Lan/Taitung area, He Jiang Lu, about 1/2 km west of the coastal hwy near the Jia Lu Lan and Xiao Ye Liu coastal parks. My in-laws (wife’s mom and brother) live right by formally known as Fu Shan Guo Xiao (elementary school–now some type of special international bilingual school under a new name).
