Taiwan Beach Season 2023

How to stay safe in the surf this season?

A few select beaches have started lifeguard patrols. Qijin in Kaohsiung has a lifesaving station. Lifeguards will be on duty.

If you doubt the surf conditions or your swimming ability, play it safe and don’t go out.

Here is a Rip Current Survival Plan to help you stay safe this season.

Please feel free to post comments about your local beach.

What do think would be the minimum requirements for someone venturing into the surf?

I would say some knowledge of the area (if there are any riptides in the area, for example), ability to swim maybe 50m without difficulty, some previous experience in open water situations and especially ocean water situations, ability to tread water for a couple of minutes with ease, and knowledge about what to do if caught in a riptide.

U know those pools they have which simulate waves for surfing?
It’d be cool if one like that existed but for riptides, simulate it safely so u can experience it before it kills u

The circular “lazy river” at my local swimming pool is a mild version of this. The challenge is to not to touch the bottom. My kids get NT25 for every successful lap. Now they are swimming freestyle around the course and coining it.
