Respect to the man.

As a guy who’s been hiking alone for 15 years, let me raise a humble eyebrow. People die everywhere all the time in all circumstances. Best thing we can do is have an accurate assessment of the risks and base our decisions on it.

Also, things like letting friends know our itinerary and estimated time home doesn’t hurt.

I used to swim in Taiwan’s ocean alone too and while it’s true most of the time hiking and swimming alone is fine it’s a safety feature to have others around if possible

Dead people in Taiwan have the best beautiful hillside views.

Lots
Of tragedy
From unpreparedness , or accidents or bad
Luck

Which country is beautiful if you are dead?

Rip
No one can judge the level of despair
But for the grace of God

That is the point isn’t it

Yeah true. I hiked on my own a lot in the past, well actually with a dog (does that count as alone ha)?
I have some training and experience , I once had some bad luck , I survived because I knew what to do and was well prepared. Anyway I don’t hike at all now.

Recent story here in the USA a hiker was missing and found dead sixteen days later

His dog was still with him barely alive

The dog never left his side

So if you hike with only your dog you still risk your life and you risk your dogs life too

Dogs only have the intelligence of a 2 year old child
Not many of them are
Able to do a Lassie and go find help and bring them to you

Can two year old children survive in the mountains like Taiwanese dogs can? The analogy of comparing dogs to two year old humans is not a good one. But thanks for the lecture..

Mountain dogs
Have learned to survive and possibly learned from the pack
An average pet suddenly left in the hills with a dead owner may not fare so well

You think it’s a lecture ? I was pointing out a simple fact that your dog may not survive in the woods if you don’t

Not even saying you shouldn’t take your dog
People take their kids into the woods too and they could fall down ravines and be eaten by bears

But it’s all relative ? What are the risks versus the rewards

There’s always risk 24/7.
Even if you did nothing and stayed home you can die from a house fire or a quake or a truck crashing into your house or an airplane

By the way not a lecture and I don’t need to win an argument

But dogs and cats have been studied to have the intelligence of a two year old child

Some are dumber
Some are
Smarter

Just like kids

So continue as you are
Go hiking take your dog
Life’s too short to worry all the time
And the average dog only lives
Less than 15 years so if he loves to go I’d take him too

He’s getting to be good at this.

Sad news, but props to Petr for helping his family find closure.

How do you accidentally fall into a waterfall? I’m guessing he was already in a state of panic.

The increase of hiking incidents during the pandemic is alarming. Too many people chasing IG moments with no outdoors experience.

Edit: ok he was trying to stream trace out and was forced to try and climb down the waterfall with no ropes.

Don’t try and follow streams out. Wait for rescue.

Lack of ability to see and plan for danger. It’s just a lack of experience.

Not again! If he had watched any beast runner videos he would have known never to stream trace in Taiwan.

Petr, Beast Runner, recently got in some baseless controversy over this video. A rescue trainer, who seems to be a part of the fire department, criticized him for charging a fee for his search and rescue outings.

I’m guessing the difference between this search and rescue from the many many ones Petr did before is that this time it wasn’t the family that asked for Petr’s help. The missing hiker was 50 and got divorced. Basically, his estranged family was ready to accept the hiker was gone.

The person who asked for help was just a friend of the hiker. In the end, the hiker’s family paid 100k for locating the missing hiker, but I guess some complaints got out, and caused the rescue trainer to comment online.

Multiple lawyers and hiking influencers came out in support of Petr. I mean, if there are people who feel Petr should have charged for risking his life to search for missing hikers, they should have located the hikers before Petr, since he has been missing for months, and do what they feel is honorable, not charge a dime.

Feck them, people will complain about anything. How much does a funeral cost ? Do they want the body or not, because what I saw from the video was really hair-raising stuff, doubt anybody else would have found it.
