Taiwan Mobile plan

I’ve been paying $1,200 a month for my TW mobile plan for the past four months or so. I’m considering calling it off. Can the contract be terminated? Is there really a penalty for having it cancelled? Thank you.

The penalty is you pay the remainder of the contract in one lump sum

Why do you want to cancel? Moving away? You can write a letter to corporate to negotiate if you are moving away with proof of foreign permanent residency / work offer / etc. I have no idea if this works in Taiwan, but it works in other countries.

I would like to change to another network which is cheaper than what I have now.

During Covid I had a TW mobile 1-year plan (400 a month or something) and went back to the US. Then covid hit and my mom said not to come back to Taiwan, which dragged on for a year when I finally came back. I totally forgot that I even had a mobile plan. Anyway I walked into TW mobile and they said I had to settle the debt of X amount before I can start a new plan. They did not try contact me through other means (the TW mobile lady even had my Line) since the amount owed was less than 5k, they probably figured it wasn’t worth it to pursue.

If you have a 2-3 year plan and you left after 3 months at $1,200 a month then that might be worth it for them to pursue.

I have a 2 year contract with them.

You have the option of upgrading anytime without additional fee

TW mobile 5G + home WiFi bundle pricing is pretty good so you may consider that. The 1599 plan gets you unlimited 5G + 1 Gbps home internet and TV channels. I am on that now. A similar plan from other providers would be much more expensive. Only a little more than what you’re paying.

Is it possible to downgrade it from $1200 to maybe $500-700 or any option lower than $1000.

Anything is possible if you get them to agree to it, but not likely unless you have something to complain about such as bad data speeds and know how to complain.

I know a Taiwanese friend who is really good at complaining. She once got a complete refund on a shipment due to bad customer service but it took many calls. And she seems good at negotiating with the tax officer to lower her tax. Maybe this is why many foreigners leave local issues to their Taiwanese spouses.
