No, it isn’t a justification. On what planet to traffic cops either carry guns or shoot to kill? Ahh, ‘the west’? You see, that’s the problem: the shitty depressing attitude that you ‘westerners’ are all the same. You mean ‘the USA’, don’t you? And if the USA do it, Taiwan has to ape that, no matter how barbaric and second world it is?
Nobody deserves lethal force for drink driving, for resisting arrest, or for assaulting someone. That’s demented. He deserved a good fcking smack, prosecution, a fair trial and a stretch inside by all accounts. But to be shot from behind? No way, you freakbags.
Disclosure: although we aren’t close friends, I know him and was heartbroken to hear what happened. Of course what he did was wrong. Of course.
Hey, how did that Zain Dean case work out for you, I mean after you put in all that hard work defending him? Oh yeah, he did, was convicted, twice, did a runner and left his friends in jail covering for him. Fucking press man. They were so, er, right, about him. :raspberry:
Oh, and shooting someone in the leg is trying to disarm them. A cop in the Fort Hood case shot the mass murdering loon in the hand. That lethal too? I mean, guns are dangerous and all. Shooting them center mass is not trying to disarm them. You guys have played too many vidiot games if you thinking shooting someone in the calf means instant death.
I fail to see what bearing the Zane Dean case has on this case, though, apart from xenophobic tabloid media.
As cfimages pointed out earlier, why hasn’t the LAOWAI finger-pointing continued? It makes for good copy in the “media”.
And stop with the sanctimonious, holier-than-thou hand-wringing bullshit. We’re all guilty of heinous stuff in our lives. We regret it now, and shudder, but we got away with it at the time. Did it make us better people? Hopefully, the realization of the potential horror that we could have caused, does.
Well, you think that because they are such things, that they are also factually incorrect.
That’s a good question. It got a lot of time on the TV last week, but for one day and then everybody moved on. Maybe that FB support group worked!
Oh please. Why is it when others jump on the nuts of one’s friends when they have massive wrong, they become sanctimonious?
You maybe. Me? Not so much. I’m not in your boat, and I’m not in his boat. You’re sounding almost CHRISTIAN there jimbo. Casting stones 'n all.
Not true. Some do it, regret it, and never do it again. Is that the case here? Or is this one example of a long line of examples? Who knows? I think it is quite fair to speculate. This guy’s close friends aren’t talking, but there are enough people around that know him on the peripheral, and slowly slowly, they’ll come out, just like in the ZD case, to provide a broader picture. You “friends” might want to stop the bullying of people who ask questions or slam the guy’s behavior though, or this thread will be a hundred pages long too.
You’re a veritable fucking SAINT, aren’t you, rodeo?
Tell me: If someone you truly loved; a family member, a close friend, had a lapse of reason and did something stupid and reckless, would you be all over the internet baying for their blood? I doubt it. You’re a bigger man than that. And loyal.
Why is it so difficult for people to accept that a good friend had a brain-fart, fucked up, and his friends didn’t turn their backs on him?
People are fucking callous sometimes.
And stop with the “what ifs”. What he did was reprehensible and totally out of order. But he DIDN’T kill somebody whilst driving drunk. Nor did he drive over a cute kitten.
I don’t need to be a saint, jimbo. This isn’t about me.
And I’m not baying for anyone’s blood. I’ve said what I said on yonder mountain, so why repeat it here?
People will talk and ask questions and give their opinions and then, mostly walk away. But when you “friends of the accused” come in and call them stupid, and sanctimonious, and absurd, it pisses them off. WE did not do anything wrong here, and OUR integrity is not in question, nor is our irresponsibility or our own carelessness.
A brain fart? Really? So this was a one time deal? My sculpted arse it was. And that is the kind of propaganda that got you in trouble with the anti-ZD crowd.
And my loyalties don’t change in the wind. I won’t hang out with irresponsible, careless and self-destructive people. Hell, I won’t even friend them on FB.
You may see yourself in this guy. I don’t. :no-no:
I am just baffled at how full of shit some of the posts here are. The guy was not even charged with assault, ffs! “Trying to get the police officer weapon”?!?! Give me a break.
Man, just when I thought the thread on TFTMNBN was the worst, here comes the flob to lower the bar a bit more.
He is not charged with assault… yet. It could change, or it could be that the rather different legal tradition the system here is at least partly influenced by would see a bulled fired from the side into both his legs punishment enough for the assault. Or, it could be that the officer was proud enough to get his 100kg+ wilderbeest, so he decided merely to tell media.
Boy, another train wreck of a thread in the making. Let the calls for video evidence, accusations of evidence tampering and condemnation of local media begin. Oops, I can see they already have.
This guy rode with a BAC that would kill some people, ran from police at high speeds whilst drunk and became so combative and violent as to cause a local police officer to have to use his sidearm.
I’m no noob. I’ve lived here over a decade, speak and read Chinese well enough to understand local media and have the critical skills to read them critically. I see no reason to doubt what has been reported so far. I don’t really care that they called him “laowai” or “fat.” Some are latching onto these non-issues as distractions. Did he DUI or not? Did he run from police or didn’t he? Everything points toward him having done both.
As a foreign resident in Taiwan, and as a parent, the thought of this guy racing down roads on his barely guided missile like that angers me. His behaviour was nothing short of abhorrent and completely indefensible.
As for events leading up to his being shot, frankly, his high-speed runner attempt more than justified it IMO. But I’m also certain he attacked the police. Anyone with any amount of experience with local police knows that local cops err on the side of doing nothing. You’d have to do a lot to get a local cop to respond with any amount of force, let alone shoot you.
I’m sure, as in the past, this person’s supporters will swarm this thread and attempt to distract, confuse and obfuscate the matter before long. And, of course, the inevitable insults won’t be far behind.
I am not brainwashed by The Apple daily or TVBS. I do not speak with “forked tongues.” I do, however, think this a terrible example of lawless behaviour. I think the perpetrator needs to make some serious changes in his life, and I think his friends need to rethink the direction they are taking in supporting him. There’s being there for a friend, and then there’s enabling.
As a resident in Taiwan, I am appalled at the actions of this man.
You are basing your assumptions on biased sources, the apple daily (clearly racist) and the policeman in question.
I don’t know the DUI guy here, he clearly deserves some punishment, but you don’t know all the details of the case just like me , so Id say hold your horses until you find out more. The guy was a DUI on a scooter and I don’t see any real evidence that he attacked the cop, so getting shot seems to have been an extreme move. What it actually looks like to me is that the cop got excited and trigger happy and the guy that was shot may have a case for compensation. The cop does not seem to have been attacked or assaulted.
It’s rare in Taiwan for cops to shoot ‘runners’ so it needs to be investigated.
The lack of furore in the usual foreigner bashing media tells its own tale.
As others have mentioned we need more details from all sides.
If he really just got shot for running I’d say it’s a tad overzealous, but still can’t help but to chuckle a bit . If it was self-defense the cop needs to pass greater marksmanship standards before being released back on duty
