They all seem to be in my local park !
I’m seeing more older people working. The guards at office and apartment buildings, of course, and more people at places like McDonald’s and more older folks doing manual jobs.

Taiwan’s birth rate is officially the lowest.
Construction sites in Taiwan have lots of older workers and you’ll even see older couples working on them sometimes. It’s pretty unusual.
Taiwan needs those young SEA’s working in Taiwan that are willing to stay here and form a family, Those should be offered citizenship
Added, not just young SEA’s, any young is a better description, I just used SEA’s as there are many of them here already
do they count people with ARC? and also NWOHR???
Who are you talking about? The Indonesian and Phillipinos are having their kids back home. Not here. Vietnam now also a birth rate below replacement level.
Every country needs to figure this out. We need to start having our own kids not just import people who are willing to have kids unless we are all happy for the whole planet to become muslim.
But yea I agree some short term measures would be nice. It would be nice for taiwan to do something, anything.
Taiwanese young people don’t want to have kids, and there are young people that comes here and wants to stay, but more needs to be encouraged to stay here, work and create a long term life with their own family
You know most people from the Philippines I have met here are Catholics? Anyway religion is not a concern, especially the more relaxed Islam as in Indonesia
Maybe you prefer what Terry Guo was promoting when running for the presidency? Give all that have a newborn kid a dog? ![]()
Taiwan watched wave after wave of students that they trained leave after getting scholarships in Taiwan for decades. They paid to watch people take their skills back home. Talk about short-sighted.
The first step is private industry needs to start hiring semi skilled international professionals. Without that why would anyone stay to work in a factory forever or for Westerners work in a kindy for life.
Again WHO? Vietnam also has a shrinking birth rate. Are Phillipines women shacking up Taiwanese? I dont think so. They ones coming here already have several kids back home. Same for Indonesians.
Google says the Philippines birth rate is also declining so I don’t know why you felt the need to bring up that its a Christian country.
And giving every kid a free dog is a pretty insensitive joke considering theres tons of free dogs here in shelters etc.
You brought up Philippines, so why did you bring it up? Why? Why? Why? And you brought up religion, so Why did you do that?
So only westerners who have come to Taiwan and stay for a long time? How about their birth rates? Or then it is not valid anymore?
So sue Terry Kou then, let’s see if you can win. Joke on you
There’s 850k blue collar workers here already , mostly of child bearing and rearing age. In fact they account for a very significant % of that cohort. That all these residents don’t have kids and don’t settle here is definitely contributing to the low birth rate.
I’m guessing something superstitious. What was the animal last year and is it unpopular?
2024 was dragon, so I guess some people who wanted to have kids did it that year.
I’ve wondered too. Is this some sort of Covid hangover maybe? The people who could have started dating or marrying five years ago didn’t?
There definitely seems to be more and more of a cultural sense against having kids. If the topic comes up, most of my college students scoff at the idea.
Something definitely happened. Dragon pull forward. It could be covid. It could be everybody going to Japan instead of having bsbies. It could be that that cohort is shrinking already which would spell disaster.
Got a few years yet but it’s starting to kick in at the 28 year olds…so maybe…
You see 5 years later we are double fucked, pardon my expression, this then kicks off an extinction kind of drop over next 20 years. The government and society are so far behind the curve on this.
I haven’t even seen the media speculate or talk about why 2025 was particularly bad, 27% decrease in one year ! Heads in the cloud stuff.
The only tidbit I got was this - Declining Marriage Rates: In Taiwan, childbearing is deeply tied to marriage; however, annual marriages plummeted by over 16% in 2025.
Again no explanation why such a huge drop off though.
I brought up Phillipines, Indonesia and vietnam because I was directly replying to your comment about SEA people working here.. who are mostly from those 3 countries.
I never said anything about Westerners.
I’m just saying sure, we have a lot SEA workers here but that doesn’t nessasarily mean they are boosting the population or are going to if they can stay here.
