Taiwan POW Remembrance 17th & 18th November

Dear Friends and Supporters of the TaiwanPOW Camps Memorial Society,

Once again it is the time of year when we pause to reflect on the
sufferings and sacrifices of our soldiers, sailors and airmen through so
many wars. November 11th is Remembrance Day in the Allied countries, and I
hope that you will take a moment to pause at the 11th hour on the 11th day
of November to remember those who gave so much for the freedom that so
many of us take for granted today.

This is also the time when we hold our annual “Remembrance Weekend” event
to honour all the veterans and the former Allied prisoners of war who
suffered in the Japanese prisoner of war camps during WWII.

The event includes a POW Banquet on Saturday evening November 17th at the
Imperial Hotel, 600 Linsen North Roadin Taipei, and the Remembrance Day
Service on the site of the former Kinkaseki POW Camp in the POWMemorial
Parkat Chinguashi on Sunday November 18th.

The POW Banquet will take place at the Imperial Hotel at 6:30pm. It is
held in honour of the POWs and provides an opportunity for those in the
community to meet and talk with them and to listen to their stories. Doors
open at 6:00 pm. The cost is NT$1000 per person and reservations for the
banquet are required, as seating is limited.

On Sunday chartered buses will take participants and guests to the
Remembrance Service at Chinguashi (near Jiufen). The cost is NT$300 and
reservations are required for the bus which will depart from the CTOT
office at 365 Fushing North Road- sharp at 8:45am. After the ceremonies
everyone is invited to join together for a time of fellowship over a
picnic lunch. The buses will return to the city around 3pm.

Reservations for the banquet and the bus can be made by calling –

Crystal Hsu at the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei– Tel: 02-2544-3461
(direct)

or email to: crystal.hsu@international.gc.ca

The deadline for reservations for both events is 5 pmon Wednesday November
14th.

It is highly recommended that the bus transportation provided be used, as
there is no parking for private vehicles at the site, and we cannot be
responsible for anyone getting lost on the way or being late for the
service, if going by private vehicle.

For further information you may contact me or Crystal Hsu. Reservations
are to be made with Crystalonly.I thank you for your continued support
and I welcome you to join us for this year’s Remembrance Day activities. I
assure you that you will not be disappointed and your support will mean so
much to our veterans. Please kindly pass this information on to any others

I booked places for both the banquet and the bus trip near the deadline on Wednesday afternoon. Crystal Hsu told me that there could still be places available for both. Now it’s Friday evening so I guess you won’t be able to contact Crystal at her office but she still might check her e-mail. For the bus trip, you could still turn up at the meeting point on the off chance, and just go and do something else if the buses are full. (Crystal Hsu told me they have booked three minibuses,)

I try and attend the POW memorial events every year - It’s very interesting.

POW banquet location:

Imperial Hotel, No. 600, Linsen North Road, Zhongshan District, Taibei 台北市林森北路600號台北華國大飯店

It’s in the “combat zone” round the corner from Minzu East Road. Nearest MRT Minquan West Road then 10 minutes’ walk. Not far from Florida Bakery and the new Caves Bookstore.

Map:

Boarding point for bus to Kinkaseki/Jinguashi - outside the Canadian Trade Office, 13F, 365, Fuxing North Road, Taipei 105 (near Zhongshan Junior High School MRT Station at the north end of the Muzha (brown) Line and Fuxing North/Minquan East Roads intersection.

As of 9pm this evening (Saturday), there are still about ten seats available on the buses to Kinkaseki/Jinguashi tomorrow morning, so why not just turn up and see? If you go, bear in mind that the weather up there is several degrees cooler than Taibei and it can start raining at the drop of a hat. Take an extra bit of clothing and an umbrella. And if you don’t go…well…you don’t know what you’re missing.
