In Europe you have a lot of houses that age and older. My parent’s house is built in 1970 and in excellent condition, well maintained.
Yep it’s pretty common, although most of Taiwan’s houses were thrown up practically overnight, lumps of reinforced concrete .
They are still lumps of reinforced concrete but now they have parking and elevators and security.
Well… I say the same for Taiwan too because the not-well-condition ones were taken out by the '99 earthquake.

That’s debatable, if a big one hit Taipei the shit may indeed hit the fan. Fortunately most of the old gongyu seem practically indestructible. Linked together in rows of reinforced concrete blocks . Usually it’s the mid size towers that seem to fall over from the earthquakes.
I don’t see any debate. There are millions of shitty buildings in Taiwan. They will fall if a big one hits.
I believe the reason why Taiwan’s tenement houses look like that is because of earthquake regulations in the first place.

All these shiny new apartment developments above, how long do they take to build? For comparison, they just finished a 12 storey apartment block down the road that took 3 years… seemed very slow at every stage from breaking ground to finishing.
