I would say, that prices of vegetables and fruits in Taiwan can reach the same as in Europe.
Just in Taiwan the same price is, for example, per apple and in Europe per kilogram.
I think these are separate issues for the Taiwanese public. I also donât think the government fears civilian nuclear power. But they know that the public does and that there is intense local opposition whenever it is time to site any facilities related to nuclear power or radioactive waste.
A large number of fields is already being used to grow oilseed rape (which is converted to bio fuel) and corn (which is thrown into biogas plants to produce electricity). Nothing related to food production at all.
The risk of solar farms causing a shortage in the good supply is a rather ridiculous claim. The fraction of the fields growing food for human consumption (in Germany) is rather low.
One more time: nuclear power in Taiwan right now is a liability. It is a big target with devastating consequences.
The issue is manipulated politically indeed but objectively, the plants are obsolete and managed poorly, they cannot be renewed promptly and there are no plans nor venues to get rid of the nuclear waste. Those are not small problems and that is why the plants are being decommissioned.
The Americans stopped Taiwan from having nukes AND gave zero security in return. That conspiracy theory is about as retarded as most stuff from the ccp.
The amount of land is alsoâŚnot remotely similar to say Germany. Even if we 2x, even 3x, taiwans land mass for climatic reasons in terms of production.
Taiwan does have a shit tone of roof tops and infrastructure readily available to plug into the grid. Seems clear the leadership in Taiwan has all but given up on food security and has just said fuckit, import it. Not a smart move at all for any country. Even our rice stores, requires water and heat. Maybe the government breeding g projects will yield better results with tropical wears and turning rice into a C4 plantâŚI wouldnât want to have a government counting on that though.
I say put them in Daan, maybe one near the 101. Theyâre safe and nuclear waste isnât an issue here. Give the people what they want like the coal plants in Taichung, right there in high populations. So great, we can nearly eat the air with chopsticks, Yum!
TAiwans nuclear power plants are very very old. well past their retirement time already. And the 4th nuclear power plant was built largely at a cost of 12 billion plus USD but will not be turned on because of design irregularities and contruction irregularities and its unsafe. Also fukushima proves taiwan can not allow nuclear power because of the very real possibility of a large earthquake and tsunami destroying a reactor and contaminating a large part of the land and making it uninhabitable for generations. TAiwan has no land to spare.
wouldnt do to have say a 60 mile by 60 miles piece of land laid to waste by a tsunami destroying a power plant (where they are all close to the ocean for cooling).
Now about that food security issue: How much of it is actually coming from mainland China? I mean if things should go rough, would mainland China even have to invade? Couldnât they just starve the island into submission?
