Is the fear of mainland China taking over real, or not? Might some find it in their self-interest to go with the winning team? More accurately, can we “follow the money” and see if Taiwanese are changing their portfolios and developing a “go plan” to get the hell out in the event/before it is too late?
我是中國人 can mean “I am of Chinese ethnicity”, “I am Han Chinese”, “I have Chinese nationality”, etc. and you need to look at the context to which it’s spoken.
Btw in Singapore they have this Singpass government app that lists your ethnicity. I looked at my Taiwanese friend’s app and it shows Chinese too. I asked him if it should say Taiwanese, and he said no he’s Chinese ethnicity. Over 95% of Taiwan are Han Chinese. It doesn’t mean they have China citizenship. The same way that China Air and Republic of China having the word ‘China’ does not mean they are related to mainland China.
This has been going on for 70 years already, the rich Taiwanese are not keeping all their cash in Taiwan. Same as the rich Chinese in China gets parts of their money out, the rich in Hong Kong, Korea etc. North East Asia has always been a bit unstable so people with money are diversifying now as they always have done.
People should REALLY worry about how p3ople digest I formation. Reading, critical thinking. Fraud is more rampant than ever, why? People are dumber now. Despite having more access to information.
If this doesn’t read as a very urgent crisis, what will?
Taiwan, China and whatever. It’s an intelligence problem, moreso than a propaganda one. Teach the kids how to think, not so much what to feel.
Yes, and national/cultural identity is a complex topic. The OP suggests the question, is their a growing trend for it among people here right now? I assume it’s based on recent statements by Lai, Trump’s lukewarm support, and Japan’s tussle with China. A colleague mentioned to me about her family working on an exit plan based upon this recent news. I do think the question of loyalty to country/identity, (and your family’s fortune) does play a role in the decision to fight or flee.
I think that more people in Taiwan nowadays have the means to actually plan for a “what if” scenario. Same as some people were planning for a “what if” scenario in case Covid would have hit Taiwan much harder than it did.
Another thought I have, is that even the situation currently is not the best, tension is high, however if comparing with Chen Shui-bian‘s presidency in the early 2000’s, I personally think we are further away from a war now than during that time. He was a crazy bastard who enjoyed poking the bear
One could venture a thought that back when Taiwan and china were in a more hot type of war (actually firing at each other) people were more prepared. More diligent. More realistic. Despite being far less educated and having far less access to information….one would be in jail for talking facts back then.
In the country of Taiwan, people are far more financially wealthy now than before. But it seems far less intellectually wealthy. This is of grave concern. The laziness, ignorance and basic complacency amongst the average person should be alarming. Not so long ago, just a few decades in fact, even the Chinese KMT were anti China (PRC) oppression. This has changed. decades long, the [allowance of] importing of brides, raising families, bribes, social media, financial benefits, internatiknal coercion and other threats have all made the average idiot into a weapon against ones’ country’s rights and freedoms. This should be more alarming than it is. Even if some get it, most either don’t get it or don’t want to care about it. That’s actually worse than just regular ol ignorance.
Doesn’t help Taiwan has NO official support and the world is happy funding their own enemy. Which is fucking WILD!
I dont know what this guys deal is. Sounds like an ABC. Which makes me think of eddie hwang.
He used to say lots of pro china KMTish shit.
Influenced by his parents most likely.
People in Taiwan are not saying this though, although for the first time ever china is having soft power sucess with those ugly toys(labubu)and tick tok. Some youngsters have been influenced and are now using some simplified Chinese because its trendy.
Which is a bit of a shift. Before i don’t think people would have even wanted this type of association with the mainland.
No one wants to be associated with the losing team or a poor nation. But recently with AI competition, Nvidia CEO saying 50% of AI researchers are Chinese, US not being able to sustain their trade war with China, etc. there is more pride with being ethnically Chinese even if you don’t have Chinese nationality. 75% of Singaporeans identity as ethnic Chinese and it doesn’t mean they are from China. An American born kid who has ethnic Chinese parents but hasn’t been to China is also ethnically Chinese.
They’re using them because those products are already successful. Not about being on the losing team, that statement was more about being associated with being ethnic Chinese.
Consumerism is different than identity. If you go to Taiwan Costco many of the appliances are shipped from TCL in China and people are happy buying them.
The BBC is not doing well, as criticized from the Left by folks such as George Monbiot. This point does not make TIK TOK anything remotely resembling a solid source.
This guy needs to lay off the leaning towards China speak and use proper big boy words. If he isn’t OK with Taiwan, at least say his race properly, not use a single country’s nationality as your race. He’s kind of a tool in this se se, but he likes money. Gotta give him that.
Just another tech bro, this time sporting a leather jacket and wandering around night markets with TV cameras breathlessly following him. Don’t be fooled!
