Taiwanese cuisine

I want to take a visitor to traditional Taiwanese restaurant like Haoji 好記, but am wondering if there is anything equally authentic but less expensive… He lives in Asia already, so I want something that screams “Taiwan!”

Xindongyang at the corner of Nanhai and Dingzhou Rd. in Wanhua is one iof the few authentic Taiwanese seafood places in Taipei. There is a goose restaurant (Xiongji) on Guangfu S. Road that reeks Taiwaneseness. It’s just south of Renai on the east side of Guangfu Open late, cheap, and good.

those xinye places are taiwanese, comfortable, reasonable and good.

Thank you both. I will go with Feiren’s suggestion.

The Xinye chain was actually inspired by Qingye (Green Leaf), which has been serving authentic Taiwanese fare for nearly 50 years. It’s in an alley off Zhongshan N Rd (east side) between Changan and Nanjing. Though not cheap, it’s high quality Taiwanese food that caters to many Japanese tourists.

The Taiwanese restaurant at Brother Hotel (Nanjing and Fuxing N. Road) is very good but you have to choose from the menu carefully. I’ve been there about 5 or 6 times now and it has been excellent half the time and felt a little disappointed the other times. The one time I went on my own bill (not when guests are in town and the company pays) I think it was a bit over NT$1000 for two. But I’m not a big seafood fan so that really makes things cheaper for these types of restaurants.

Don’t get the san bei ji as I’ve had much better at Taiwanese beer establishments. Now that I think of it, it’s seems their spicy dishes in general leave much to be desired. Some dishes really are excellent, though.

Beef Noodles. The shop on Yongkong Street on the alley just south of Alleycats is great.

Is this different from the dim sum place at the same hotel?

Yes, they’re both on the same floor (the second) but different restaurants. Should belong in another thread but I really do like their Cantonese (dim sum) restaurant (better than their Taiwanese restaurant).

Feiren,

I enjoyed your suggestion. It was a nice place.

I agree. One of the best on the island IMHO. I worked in the area last year and ate there often.

Feiren suggested two places. Which one did you go to?

I found these in a list of Taiwanese cuisine restaurants, and thought I’d post the names here. I don’t have any further info on them.

Green Leaf (青葉, est. 1964)
Umei (梅子, 1965)
Hsin Ye (欣葉, 1977)
Orchid Restaurant in Brothers Hotel (兄弟飯店蘭花廳, est. 1979)
Howard Plaza Hotel’s Formosa (福華飯店蓬萊邨, 1985)

I travel around Asia on business and I am always being brought to the type of restaurants suggested above, SO boring. Any business people in Asia will know the routine, visit customer, go to local ‘posh’ cuisine restaurant with round table and usually in a sealed off room with no atmosphere, take out ten courses of the local favourites. If I have another Beijing duck I’ll choke on it.

There’s nothing that screams Taiwan than ‘Kuai Chao’ beer, stir fry and seafood restaurants. San Ming Road in XinDian has about a dozen, of which 3 or 4 are excellent, plus a bunch of good sushi places in between. There are other kuai chao in Taipei city but they are hit and miss unless you know the place first. Zhonghe and Yonghe also have some good ones.

These are seriously the most authentic, best atmosphere and most unique food places of Taiwan. Plus you can get pissed and have a good time!

The Brother Hotel restaurant used to be very good. Haven’t been back for about 5yrs. Never liked to food at Howard Plaza. 欣葉 is very good, but $$ for what you get.

Second the recommendation for Brother Hotel.

But hhII is right that Taiwanese kuaichao seafood places are the way to go. Here is alistincluding Taipei City.

I like this one:

5.店名:食園生猛活海鮮 Shiyuan Shengmeng Seafood
地址:北市和平東路3段228巷41號1樓 No. 41 Lane 228 Heping E. Rd Sec. 3, Taipei City
電話:02-2735-7796
營業時間:17:00~02:00
老闆:林文隆、黃奕臻
推薦:鹹蛋絲瓜、麻辣花枝、泰式檸檬蝦、綜合生魚片

There’s an entire strip of these 100NT kuaichao restaurants on Changan E. Rd. between Linsen N. and Xinsheng N. that open late and do great business. It’s like a clean night market with indoor seating and cute Taiwan Beer promo girls.
