Berry Season in Northern Europe, cheap by Taiwan prices.
Went to family mart, gone is the Blue Berry Ice milk

Back from a business trip abroad, spent 2 days in Taipei. Some food opinions:
We, me and my team and some friends, LOVE Indian food. The various gravy/curry/sauce with a Naan bread to dip is basically heaven.
Thanks to @afterspivak for this recommendation.
Orchid Indian
My opinion of it was overall great! I forgot all the different ones we tried. The only complaint was the noisy drunk Japanese (par for the course in that area for dinner lol) and the Naan were very soft. Only thing I would do next time is ask them for a more crispy Naan. All the sales, veh, cheese, meat were good. What stands out to me is the staff were actually VERY nice. After food I care about 2 things: how clean it is and how respectful the staff are. They spoke nearly no mandarin, so I guess that sucks for some non English speakers. But they made up for that with smiles and being polite. I’m sold.
Second point, which I consider a HUGE plus, but some may consider a negative. Their “curries” are not overloaded with msg and other sodium. They are pretty good as is, but many a place overdoses it (Indian summer is very good, but too salty in the sauce sometimes, not a good balance).
I give the food a 7/10 but with the staff (I assume the bosses duaghter?) I say 8.5. The experience was thoroughly positive. The later has slightly less options, but they are good.
I will personally go to either them or Indian summer, just depends where I am physically. Both quite good for a not too expensive meal.
Next one
Taipei Main station 2nd floor food court Curry.
3/10. The palak laneer was watery and shit. 2/10. They had Naan so one more point, but the Naan was also mediocre.
Next up
Shishlik Pita x kebab 西西里克中東料理餐館店
I had a bad review last time we went because their sauce was truly too salty. It ruined the whole thing.
My wife insisted we give it a second try, and she was right. WAY better this time! Glad we went back. This time we also got the shakshuka, which was quite nice. They use a basically Mexican salt seasoning on this and their pide. But it was still good. Not sure authentic.
A solid 7/10. Its jsut the one guy running it, so I guess it varies. He put up with our group having a loud and deep debate on the ethics and legality of both the sex trade and nude hotsprings. Plus the table of aunties next to us gossiping about their friends. Didn’t say a thing, so he seems like a patient fella! Potty their stair case looks gross and the stench of stinky tofu, but it’s much different when inside his door.
Next up. We went back south via east coast. Spent the night in taitung city before heading g to kaohsiung.
Tanya’s. Thai food. It does seem better than most taiwanese Thai spots. 8/10. But they aren’t the usual sugar/salt/msg/fried crap we have come accustomed to. Still very flavorful. I want to go back as she only had 2 things available when we arrived. Curry and seafood curry. I forgot the actual names and didn’t get a picture of the menu. The Thai tea is also way more bearable in terms of not being insta diabetes level sweet
plus 1
Pictures are seafood and chicken curries
Next up. Another taitung city spot opened by a risotto restaurant. For south park fans, they geared this towards the new age douchey “Kenny’s house” atmosphere. So as I sat down I became quite bias to be honest. But was surprised. It was pretty good. 6-7/10. The chicken in the salad was way soft, that’s the only real complaint. Staff friendly. Rice, veg, meat and rissoto were all good. Except that soggy chicken for those that like chicken that way, this might be a perk.

Next up. Mondays. Right near 3 immortals platform on taitungs east coast. I’m not a coffee shop person. But their taco rice was good. 7/10. Their hot dog, 4/10. I’m not qualified to judge coffee haha. But I liked their taco rice bowl. Basically rice on bottom, a taco like meat sauce on top, then toped with salad greens and a couple nachos thrown in for crunch. Stoner food for stoners that think they’re fancy
and healthier…
Last up, the Mexican joint in Maji Square Taipei. Pretty much shit. 2/10. Had tacos and nachos, which were covered in north a.erican style liquid “cheese”
granted we were at the pub for soccer at around midnight and this taco spot had a group of drunk and rude foreigners there being retards. Last call and all that. But not good enough to try twice, despite that.
Yuck!
Didn’t even photograph the food, sadly.
Oh, then Orchid Indian Restaurant in Taipei City can help! Don’t order the naan. What you want is their delicious crispy whole wheat lachha paratha—it is awesome.
Hat tip to the irreplaceable @DunderMifflin for alerting me about this satisfying and complex tasting bread.
I agree that the welcoming service at Orchid is a plus. The woman who does not speak Mandarin is Filipina; the outgoing Taiwanese woman who manages the front of the shop does speak Mandarin, but the working language in the restaurant—with Indians in the kitchen and a Filipina in the front—is often English.
Guy
Cheers for the tip. Next time up in the big city, we will surely go there again. Will keep that tip in mind!
What is “Unif”?
Maybe the CCP doesn’t like the word president.
Or they change their logo based on country? Maybe president in Italian starts with F. But a logo is sacred ![]()
Yeah they started out great with 統一, why spoil it?
A few months ago I posted in the wack thread here about wanting to try a place that serves 三杯嚇老外 3-Cup Scares Foreigners that contains stinky tofu, pig blood cake, and century egg. I realized that I never posted a follow-up.
It was delicious! I’m not a big fan of pig blood cake or century egg, but now I like them–as long as they’re prepared in the 3-cup style.
Nice photos and reporting
Steak on spaghetti is a Taiwan dish?
I think I occasionally see some type of this at night markets it’s like the cheapest worst piece of meat all for the budget minded
It is at many night markets, lol
There’s a nice one (not at night market) in Kaohsiung near the harbor. Actual decently delicious.
Inside the restaurant, the owner has plastered old, but colored Taiwanese movie posters. Pretty cool, as most have Chinese read top to bottom, right to left, like old-school.
I’ve had good ones as well. I prefer the salmon and can skip he noodles. It’s basically just pan fried meat if we cut the sh*t.
Is this the right food thread?
Let’s let it run, cause it’s not “on spaghetti”…it is often “with noodles” to be fair. More importantly it’s a pan fry iron dish. It’s not really true taiwanese food nor exactly amazing, but it’s certainly a fan favourite in Taiwan. That, at least, is undeniable. And there are good options, as well as many dog shit options available.
