Taiwan's 2024 Presidential Election

We got a thread for that!

Guy

To compare the candidates’ platforms, CNA has reviewed their campaign websites, policy presentations and other public statements, and has compiled their positions in eight key policy areas in the charts below.

Um, okaaay…

Hey at least they are not wearing superman costumes this time.

I just hope nobody gets hurt. :slightly_smiling_face:

May the farce be with you?

Guy

I find your lack of faith disturbing…

The fact that a lot of young people are talking about the DPP like it’s the enemy even more than the KMT shows how good a job Chinese disinformation and their sponsored local actors have been doing.

You can be dissatisfied with the DPP, with the pace and scale of the promised reforms, but the internet is filled with threads comparing the DPP to the taliban or saying they are inhuman.

Ta-green-ban is inhuman

Low life Ta-green-ban turned Taiwan into a country of illegal buildings

F–k you! Ta-green-ban and Lai-er have been lying from the beginning to the end

Not to mention those that are equally false with less inflammatory titles. The goal is to overwhelm the internet with similar negative criticisms to get make people buy into the disinformation being the mainstream viewpoint.

And yet…

So not super worried about the disinformation. I think most people can see through it.

China is playing the long game with these disinformation campaigns. The disinformation is disproportionately affecting people under 30, so it might not matter right now, but in anther 10 years, they are going to became the new mainstream voters. We should also consider the long-term effects of letting these disinformation campaigns do whatever they want, especially now they control the medium of delivering information to people under 30, tiktok.

Historically the DPP has done better with young people, the KMT better with old people. If disinformation campaigns can lead to some percentage of young voters to feel disgust or anger, it’s conceivable they would just sit things out, which would play into an advantage for the pro-China guys out there.

Remember the goal of disinformation is not just to change people’s views but to make it seem like there are no good views and to stop caring.

There are some very helpful quotes from Puma Shen in that BBC article. Thank you for linking it.

Does this mean this thread should be locked?

Is public discussion permitted?

“Participate in election related work before 7am and after 10pm”.

What about the time in between?

Or should it be after 7am and before 10pm?

What am I missing?

As weird and unreliable as Ko is at least he has interesting policy promises. Hou’s is clearly wrong and Lai is ok too imho.

I don’t think posting here can be regarded as work, but rather anti-work
