Taiwan's Claims to the South China Sea

I was watching an English-language Taiwan news show and they mentioned how “China claims almost the entire South China Sea” in a snide kind of way, but, correct me if I’m wrong, Taiwan claims the same thing. The 9-dash line was actually created under the ROC.

I dunno how much they like to push the issue, but it doesn’t seem to be like the outdated constituion’s claims to mainland China, in that I know I’ve seen news articles before about Taiwan legislatures visiting one of the remote islands in the far west.

What’s the deal on this?

Seems like Taiwan should just give it up and not state the same claims as the bully next door :man_shrugging:

I won’t mention Outer Mongolia then I guess

That would mean Independence to the PRC. Taiwan has to keep those claims on paper

During the Qing dynasty, Germany, France and Japan did concede to Qing’s sovereignty claims over the Spratly Islands, Paracel Islands, and the Pratas Island. So I guess China has that going for them.

Aside from potential fossil fuel and methane hydrates deposits, I really see no point for Taiwan to hold on to these island if Taiwan ever get a new constitution.

Doesn’t Taiwan also claim the whole of the mainland?

Currently not. The kmt wants so they can be part of one China

On paper yes, but not in practise.

Taiwan doesn’t want to claim these lands, but disclaiming them means to the PRC that it is not one china, and thus, steps towards independence.

The funny thing is it was CKS who signed the treaty with the Soviets recognizing Mongolian independence in exchange for the Soviets to not provide support and aid to the CCP in Manchuria and let the KMT take over Manchuria first. When he realized he was still losing the civil war, and the Soviets obviously still assisted the CCP, CKS claimed that treaty was no longer valid. That’s why Taiwan sort of claims Mongolia on paper.
