Taiwan's Digital Identity Wallet

Trying hard to come out by end of year.

  • “will allow users to securely store their digital credentials, such as citizen digital certificates, National Health Insurance (NHI) cards, and driver’s licenses… to simplify procedures for servic"es such as ticket collections, prescription pick-ups, and telecom service registration.”

  • “will set up a mechanism to consolidate data currently scattered in various local governments, which will result in better access to the information.”

  • “will push for cooperation through a public-private partnership to achieve data integration”

  • “will only need mobile phones”, yea, ha, and will only need a) to own a capable mobile phone and b) to know how to use a mobile phone with an aging population that won’t be so handy.

They also shouldn’t forget the most iconic part of any new Taiwan digital service:
making sure dirty foreign rats on the Island are locked out of half the functions from day one.

I’m fully expecting the usual:

  • QR codes that don’t even generate if your ID number is a foreigner one.
  • English menus proudly displayed… then every useful function redirects straight to a Chinese-only page.
  • Features that look life changing, useful and time saving until you click them and get: “自然人限定 / Natural persons only.”
  • Features that technically “exist,” but vanish the moment the system realizes you’re an ARC holder.
  • Being asked to re verify your ARC/APRC at the most inconvenient time… and them having to do it manually (sometimes taking hours and other times days.)
  • Pop ups saying “ID number invalid” at random times for no apparent reason.

Oh and then the usual circle jerk of foreigners justifying this all.

Sounds like a good idea until cloudflare goes down

Half of Taiwan’s government websites don’t even bother with proper SSL certificates…
