It’s a lot hotter and more humid here so of course nobody wants to go outside at 2pm. It makes way more sense to start late because it means you can go to bed late and wake up late. Actually many work places allow employees to arrive at past 10 and leave at 7 (or if the office doesn’t care when you leave so you still leave at 6).
It’s also far more convenient to have drinks and stuff with people when you get off work in the evening.
Not really nobody There are people who specifically came to this country because it’s super hot most of the year and enjoy every day with 32+ deg temperatures and that 24/7 sauna feeling.
Plus if you live up North, it’s only that really hot weather couple months a year. Like now it’s already starting to be cool enough that you can comfortably enjoy outdoors even at noon.
Anyway I realize the cultural differences and Taiwanese “late start late end, man man lai, we have time for everything, no rush” lifestyle and I think I’ve never met a local who would complain on the time zone or said it should be changed so the sun sets later, and I’ve only met few locals who enjoy starting their office work day before 8am
Yes I agree, if you want to socialize to that level with the people you work. Where I’m from we usually don’t mix work “friends” and booze friends for practical reasons I know it’s different in Taiwan but I was never able to fully adjust to that part of mixing work and private life culture here.
Seems like the scientific way to find a timezone is when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, which is around 12 in Taiwan.
So what? What happens if you change it, then its hotter at 2 o clock? Big F’n deal. We ain’t using sun dials to tell the time anymore.
At the height of summer in Taipei the sun rises at 05:05 and sets at 18:45
Push it forward 2 hours. 7 am sunrise, 8:45 sunset.
Everyone gets more sun. People can get used to living in a more natural way inline with the circadian rhythm and all that.
Taiwan has too much of a night culture going on. It ain’t no surprise when its dark so early. People are already used to just fighting it off. Everyone uses those super bright lights in their home. Circadian rhythms don’t exist here unless you are one of those 90 yr old early morning ‘rambling hikers’.
Its all well and good saying ‘just get up at 5am’ or something but no man is an island. going to bed at 9pm to wake at 5am is going to be pretty hard if you have any kind of life here.
As I’ve probably said upthread, I try to do that in the summer in order to go for morning bike rides while it’s only infernally hot, not yet lethally so. It’s the “best” solution for me, but I don’t like it. By the time I finish cleaning up after dinner, it’s almost time for bed.
