Taking kids out of public school for (personal) holidays..?

Hi there,
My kids are in public school in Taiwan. There is a really cool 1 week ‘maker camp’ thing that is targetted at overseas chinese kids coming back for a holiday over Christmas. My kids would freaking love it! But. I’d have to basically take them out of public school for the week and let them go to the camp… I wouldn’t feel bad at all because they’d be learning heaps of good stuff and it’s all in mandarin anyway…

But this isn’t really done here, right? If you do it… do you have to kinda do it on the down low, and make up a convenient excuse for the kids to not be in school that week? Or do people openly do this and I’m overthinking it?

Same question for if relatives come to visit in Taiwan and it’s not technically school holidays. Do people ever keep the kids home for a week to maximise family time… and if so do you do it openly?

It’s fine. Just let the teacher know in advance and try to avoid missing big tests (Christmas shouldn’t be a problem).

Oh wow really - thanks for the lightning fast reply!

Seconded, never had an issue (public elementary) and kids seem to do it all the time, even big test days! Liase with the teacher and let them know in advance. They may miss out on some perfect attendance record BS “award” but it’s not an issue.

Not an issue as others have stated. Let teacher know. I’ve taken my kids for a month several times.
