Announced it on Friday evening , insiders probably loaded up already on electronics stocks. Or maybe enough 1 million dollar dinner packages were sold.
Anyway it’s a huge concession on the Chinese tariffs.
I don’t think Chinese companies will move away from Vietnam. They are also enjoying cheaper manufacturing costs in Vietnam.
Vietnam will have to somehow address the age old trick of sending goods to Vietnam to relabel as made in Vietnam to bypass customs, I’m not sure how they will crack down on it but it’s likely a key issue with a trade deal.
Vietnams long term strategy is of course growth but growth with less reliance on China. They have been a winner of US Chinese tensions but it came at the cost of huge Chinese money coming in whether it’s factories or building infrastructure of all kinds.
It’s not a bad thing itself but dependence on a potentially hostile country where territorial disputes come to play is a concern for them. Not to mention what it means if there is a war (not that anyone will be safe but it would be far worse if your country is extremely dependent on the country warring in your backyard)
So this is why it’s my view and the view of people I do business with in Vietnam that the pressure to get a trade deal done soon is a top priority.
I was ignorant of Vietnams relationship before making frequent visits there and talking to business people. I honestly that they were more friendly with the CCP with their government being “communist” as well but I was wrong. And their view of the US is overall positive (at least to my face).
So Donnie folds again. There will be no tariffs on computers, cellphones, and other electronic products- luckily China doesn’t make any of that stuff.
Poor Trump spokespeople. A few days ago:
“Trump will never back down from tariffs on the world!”
“Pssst- Trump just backed down on tariffs on the world.”
Trump spokesperson: “See? The rest of the world backed down(“Psst- no they didn’t”) to join us in imposing tariffs on China…”
“Pssst- Trump just backed down on tariffs on China.”
Trump spokesperson:"Hold on a second- somebody just gave me a new statement- “Ahem- we have always been at war with Eastasia! The chocolate ration has been increased to 20 grams!”
It’s a big loss of face to suddenly buy all that stuff from China with no tariffs after all the beating of the chest and 120% plus tariffs But the bond market and consumers spoke. I guess they realise that inflation would have gone nuts and bond markets were gonna crack .and yeah Trump family got a few big trades in on Friday wottttttt.
He also thought the NAFTA renegotiation was an example of Trump’s successful first term
I’m not even sure what’s happening now, I think Canada started tariffs on the US recently and didn’t bother to pause them all because President Yoyo is predictable. And the US has paused their’s on Canada. So the end result is Dump had accomplished only more tariffs levied against US businesses…
But I haven’t been paying very close attention for the last week or so. ..
