Some parts of Taroko Gorge will reopen later this year. But other areas will take 7 YEARS to rehabilitate 
Why would it take so long? That’s crazy.

Those two Singaporeans / Australians are still, I believe, buried under some of them. 
Besides, the current legislative representative of Hualien seems to be more hyperactively concerned with kissing a&& in the PRC than helping to repair and restore his home consituency. Priorities, you know.

Hi y’all. Long time no see…
So, a friend of mine is heading to Taiwan next weekend (typhoon notwithstanding) for a couple of weeks, and I recommend Taroko and Ruisui areas for him because he prefers fresh air over cties… But looking at Google maps, we see that pretty much everything in Taroko says “Temporarily Closed”.
does anyone know the status of day trips to the lower half of Taroko, say, up to Tienxiang area? is the whole place closed from typhoons or another barrier lake formed?

Based on the forecast I’m seeing, it looks like typhoon affected rain (or a typhoon itself) will shellack Taiwan starting next Friday. I don’t think this would be a good time to be in any mountainous areas as a tourist.
That being said, I have not been in Taroko since the 2024 earthquake, so my knowledge on this matter is unadequate, once better weather resumes. Perhaps other forumosans will know more . . .

They will be visiting Taroko a week after the typhoon so probably OK… and from Okinawa, so also probably used to typhoons.
Nice hotel! Beats the old one up there by miles.
Okay, if they are open then Google maps has incorrect information: that NEVER happens…
Lots of variables here . . . One variable that residents of Okinawa will not be familiar with is the extraordinarily fragile and crumbly geology of Taiwan (landslides, etc). From a conservative perspective, I just dunno if this is a good time.
I wonder what more experienced folks like @Bree would have to say?

Well, it’s summer. There’s always typhoons in summer, but Taroko still has tourists.

It’s an excellent hotel and Tianxiang is a special place. Been there in all the different seasons. The trip there is always interesting particularly coming from Hehuan Shan but definitely worth it.
Except for the time I cycled up Wuling, I never head in that direction. Always farther south of Hualien City. All the way to Shitiping (石提坪) sometimes. Sometimes to Guangfu.
