Tax Exemption?

Under what basis may a foreign national be exempt from paying tax in Taiwan?

I was on here on ‘business’ for more than 183 days in Taipei last year. Unfortunately, I have discovered that I am liable to pay taxes on my UK derived income during this time. This was a BIG surprise as no mention of tax liabilty was made by my employer or the company we acted as consultants for. Nor, for that matter, was any mention made during the Visa application stage (which required a letter of invitation from our client).

I have seen on within these forums somewhere, the mention of ‘consultant status’ and zero tax liability. Is this for real or is it just an urban myth?
