Tax Office says I owe no taxes on foreign salary earned while in Taiwan

I was in Taiwan 152 days last year and have a Gold Card. I work remotely for an American company.

My understanding is I should owe 18% tax on income for the 152 days I was in Taiwan.

I went to the Da’an tax office today and asked which documents I need to pay my tax. I was told by multiple people that since my company is in America and I already pay taxes there I owe $0 tax to Taiwan.

This directly contradicts what I have always read the law to be.

I mean, I am fine not paying any taxes! But I think this would create an issue proving income if I renew my Gold Card or apply for APRC.

What should I do? Go to a different office?

Dude they told you you don’t owe taxes. Who the hell argues with that?

The only tax office which knows (mostly) what they are doing with foreigners is the NTB near Beimen station. They have the central foreigner section, just go there.

Somebody worried about getting fined multiples later.

OP, go here starting May 1.

Someone who wants to stay in Taiwan and be able to renew their Gold Card? They are going to look at my application and proof of income and ask why I didn’t file any taxes for my time here lol

Thanks, I will go ask them!
