Had a Taxi ask if the change was for him (like a tip I guess)? I said no, I wanted the $100 bill, the coins her could have ($15)? Anyone gets asked this, is tips expected now? (was going to bullet rail station)
I’ve never been asked, and if a taxi driver did ask me that, I’d think they’re a cheeky git and I’d be even less likely to give them a tip.
I usually give tips, so I may be the problem.
If it’s like 180. I just give him 200 and keep the change tbh. I round up if he’s close as I don’t like to carry a bunch of coins.

Most taxi drivers insist on giving back 10NT. Maybe 5NT they will keep if you insist.

My gfs dad is a Taxi driver… after knowing him i would never tip any taxi drivers.
If people leave shit in his car he pockets it. Considers it his right. I think someone left a phone once. He contacted the guy and gave it back to him, then afterwards asked for a fee.
I think if he (Taxi) had drive out or spend time to get the phone to the customer , a fee is fine (like the return taxi fee). If the customer went to the taxi to get the phone, then a fee is in bad taste. Once I left a phone in a car share in Hawaii, called the driver later he found the phone. He had a main job at a restaurant, I later went there to pick up the phone. If I did not have a car and asked him to bring it to me, I would think a fee is fair.
Yes, seems so in Taiwan. In the Baltics tip is not expected (yet) so not worldwide. (the starting fare is Baltics is also bit lower than $85 starting fare here)
Its just the mindset. There has to be something in it for him. The act of just helping someone out just doesn’t make sense to him, there always has to be some 1-upping involved. I would guess most Taxi drivers are of a similar mindset, we are lucky the younger generation knows how to help out just for the sake of it.
OK, I thought its younger gen looking for tips. Older drivers are nice and speak decent Japanese to me.

No tips in Taiwan. Let people have basic wages and work for higher ones. Tipping will only slow the progress against the onslaught of shitty bosses and middlemen stealing the earnings of the actual workers. Demand better and complain hard against shit companies. My tip is in my time to give the company a bad time so they can improve. Affects everyone that way, instead if giving one person an extra drink.
