This is my second month as a junior high teacher for the FET program. I actually really like the job but I don’t like when there aren’t any classes which is every Wednesday, the week when students have exams, and, so far, winter break except for the public holidays. For the last week of the semester, the first days of winter break, and now this week I’m literally just sitting here watching youtube and twiddling my thumbs. Getting paid to do nothing is great for a few days but if I need to do it all summer I might go crazy, especially considering there isn’t any air conditioning in the whole school.
I’ve seen that different schools have different requirements. Some foreign teachers only need to come for camps, some only need to come for a few days, others have half days all summer. I’ve asked my school but they said they’re not sure yet and I’m the first foreign teacher they’ve had in a very long time. What have your experiences been like?
My contract usually ended around July 15 (+/- a few days). Summer English camp usually ran from July 1-3 (whatever the three business days followed the end of the semester) and then I left. I was usually home by July 8th at the latest. It’s going to depend on the individual school. Some schools expect you to always be there, others don’t. It’s better than private schools though. Many of those expect you to finish the semester on Friday and start winter/summer camp on Monday and do that during the “break”

Ah I see, so after the camp they let you have break? Did they go ahead and renew your contract/visa and then have you come back for the new semester?
My contract is until 7/31 so I assume I’ll need to be here almost everyday. I just hope they’re half days so I can go do other stuff.
