I am planning on going to Taiwan to work on my Mandarin and experience living abroad and will most likely be teaching english while I am over there. My formal education is in finance and along with my american investment license, various courses through the Canadian Securities Institute I am also in the CFA program. How common are business english tutoring or teaching jobs in Taiwan? I only know basic Mandarin though so would there be any chance to teach business english without also being fluent in Mandarin? Lastly what is the hourly rate usually for these jobs and is it possible to suuport myself by teaching in this area? In terms of english I have a very strong understanding of all the different markets and financial instruments along with decent knowledge of accounting. My nationality is Canadian. There are more jobs teaching kids than teaching adults, but you should be able to get something if you are persistent and if you are good with people. Some establishments that have more adult learners are Lado, EIE, Wall Street, Global Village.
It usually takes time to build up enough teaching hours to make a living. Schools don’t usually add customers until they have the trainers in place to accommodate them. Also, they will want to see how well you do (read: how much the clients like you) before they schedule you a lot of clients. That’s just good business.
Pay hasn’t improved here in 20 years. Teaching adults, especially if you want to work for the top schools (Lado), requires a high level of professionalism and preparation. You might make more per teaching-hour than more casual establishments (Global Village), but you will put in a lot more unpaid time on travel and preparation.

I was once offered a position teaching business English to senior managers of various companies.
The problem was that I was required to go to their offices to teach, so a lot of travelling around town.
Secondly dressing business casual in summer while running around in the heat. No thanks.
