Tealit.com inspires Chinese-language site for New York

So this made me want to vomit quite strongly…

“Tealit helped to make his life richer, easier and more convenient, adding that it was during that time he truly fell in love with Taiwan.”

vomit, vomit, vomit

Could they set the bar any lower? :wall:

Mind you I guess if you distill the basic necessities of life in Taiwan to a moody scooter, a loose girl and kindergarten gig in Banqiao, well Tealit’s got it covered…

Yeah it’s vomit inducing but back in 2006 Tealit looked ok. It was also the first website to appear on search engines so it’s hardly surprising that he got his inspiration from it. I hope his customer service is better than Tealits.

I remember badmouthing a company once that was a competitor of the company I was working for at the time. A wise leader then said to me–“there is room enough for all in this market for everyone to get a piece.” I felt kind of bad for being so aggressive.

TEALIT is different. Forumosa has been much more useful for meeting people (non-language exchange related), for arguing politics and speaking bluntly (especially now under Gus’s leadership), and for debating issues that expats face in Taiwan. When foreigners are in trouble (e.g., last week’s suicide of an expat on the basketball net and the person’s friends/relatives wanting information), Forumosa has been a very helpful site that is community minded.

Does that make it better? Perhaps, but why the need to bash TEALIT? Insecurity? Maybe I truly believe in diversity, but I don’t think it is appropriate to criticize TEALIT even as Forumosa or other sites move more into the corporate realm. There is room enough for all and every site in Taiwan has its own niche.

TEALIT, in the early days, was a much better corporate site where quite a few new teaching jobs/editing jobs were posted every day. I’m also sure a lot of people also used its personal ads section in the early days for language exchanges.

In other words, is TEALIT a site that represents expats in Taiwan? Nope. Has it helped out foreigners in the past/present with jobs/language exchanges? Yip.

Is there a need to badmouth it? I don’t think so. Variety is awesome.

Why would it be inappropriate to criticize Tealit? Just look at it’s web design; it’s a monstrosity. It’s also legendary for mistreatment of posters. It is as appropriate to diss Tealit as it is to diss the China Post, another Taiwan institution that is of very little value to the foreign community.

That’s one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is that they used a very basic model to make a lot of money. And for many years, judging by the number of ads posted, they were hugely successful.

That line could be used for a number of sites.

If you asked most teachers in Taiwan which of the two has been more useful for them (tealit versus the China post), I think the vote overwhelmingly would be for TEALIT. While many people would likely complain about posts being removed or bad design as you mention, they’d also likely say that they found a number of employment gigs or social dates on it. China Post? Good restaurant reviews (which teachers probably often ignore hahaha) and sports page (compared with Taipei Times or Taiwan News).

In other words, I disagree with them being labelled as institutions that have very little value for the foreign community. I want to be able to judge for myself, not be told that it is or not. I think they both serve a function. :bravo:

Actually you’re right that Tealit has been of value. I always thought it was a shame though that that value could and should have been provided by “other” sites. The value was provided almost by default in that no one else was able to offer the platform Tealit did.

So instead of flat-chested betelnut girls, will we get buxom BBWs on his site instead :ponder:
