Team Taiwan's road to 2020 Tokyo Olympics (baseball)

I followed your lead and had Jeonju bibimbap and kimchi naengmyeon for dinner…

Let’s all celebrate! That looks like japchae in middle right carton.

Anybody know why Chien-ming Wang never runs out during intros?

Yup, nothing beats eating free japchae and watching Taiwan shutout Korea.

Wu Jun-liang is in charge of when to pull pitchers and who would pitch each game. Wang Chien-Ming is there to fine tune the pitchers’ mechanics.

Wang also said in an interview that he mostly help out those currently in or had been a part of the MLB system because that’s what he is familiar with, so he leaves pitcher in the Japanese system alone.

At the game…

So, the undefeated Mexico lost to Japan, and the win less Australia won over the US. With just 4 games left in the super round, the road to Beijing is more convoluted than before.

In the last 4 games, Taiwan will play against the US and Australia, both currently have 3 losses. Korea will play against Mexico and Japan, both have 3 wins. So they might have a tougher road ahead of them.

Now there are 5 ways for Taiwan to win a ticket in the P12.

  1. The first way is for Taiwan to win both upcoming games, and Korea to lose both of theirs.
We would then play against Korea for 3rd place, and we have to defeat Korea again to get that ticket.

The next two options are for Taiwan to win both upcoming games, and for Korea to only win one of theirs.

  1. If Korea wins against Japan but loses to Mexico
That would leave Taiwan, Japan and Korea all with 3 wins and 2 loses. The 3 teams will compare Team Quality Balance (TQB), and the winner will advance to play Mexico for 1st place. The losers will play for 3rd place.

TQB is calculated as such:
TQB = Total runs scored / Total offensive innings - Total runs lost / Total defensive innings.

Since Taiwan lost to Japan by a large margin, we really need to keep the US and Australia from scoring runs, and pray that Korea doesn’t win by a large margin. If they do, then Korea will play Mexico for 1st and 2nd place, meaning Taiwan will not get the Olympic ticket.

  1. If Korea wins against Mexico but loses to Japan
That would leave Taiwan, Mexico and Korea all with 3 wins and 2 loses. The 3 teams will compare TQB, and the winner will advance to play Japan for 1st place. The losers will play for3rd place.

In this scenario, Taiwan has a super high probability of getting the ticket. Korea will have to win their game against Mexico by more than 12 runs to knock us down in the TQB.

The last two options are for Taiwan to just win one out of the two upcoming games, and for Korea to lose both of theirs.

  1. If Taiwan wins against the US, but loses to Australia and Korea loses both of their games.
That would leave Taiwan, Australia and Korea all with 2 wins and 3 loses. The 3 teams will compare TQB. The 2 with the best TQB will play for 3rd place.

This scenario is extremely complicated. Although Taiwan might have a chance, as long as we don’t lose to Australia by over 10 runs. If we play Australia for 3rd place, we automatically get the ticket. If we play Korea for 3rd place, we must defeat them again.

  1. If Taiwan wins against the Australia, but loses to the US and Korea loses both of their games.
That would leave Taiwan, the US and Korea all with 2 wins and 3 loses. The 3 teams will compare TQB. The 2 with the best TQB will play for 3rd place.
We will likely get a ticket in this last scenario. Taiwan have to lose to the US for more than 10 runs or just 1 run for us to be eliminated. If we play the US for 3rd place, we automatically get the ticket. If we play Korea for 3rd place, we must defeat them again.

Like I said, it’s convoluted.

So head-to-head isn’t the first tiebreaker, as usual?

Wu is starting against the US, if Im understanding this right.

Umm…This is going to interesting. I smell another thrashing similar to what happened against Japan.

Where to watch this morning’s game in Zhongli?

I went by the River bar, Hop in bar, Hideout bar, Hide bar, and about 10 others.

Could not find anything open for Taiwan sports.

Facebook doesn’t work?

Wu sure puts some interesting spin and curve on those balls.

Well that’s one free beer tonight.

With the USA beating Taiwan 3-2, it appears that Taiwan is out of medal contention.

If Taiwan beats the AUS, then we would tie with the US at 2-3. The first tie breaker is head-to-head, and USA has beaten Taiwan.

If Taiwan loses to AUS, then we’d be 1-4 and AUS would tie USA at 2-3.
