Tell me about online poker

As the title states.
Does anyone here play?
Is it riggged?
Do you win more than you lose?
It it possible to sit around my house all day just raking in moolah on these sites?
Curious.

I have. There have been a few cases of cheating, but overwhelmingly if you play on a reputable site it’s not rigged, and they pay off winnings quickly. The sites are raking it in hand over fist so they have the incentive to keep it scrupulously honest. Also legions of players keep computerized records and would see statistically if anything was off.

Overall i’ve won more than i’ve lost. really if you know how to play and have some gambling acumen you should do okay. the sites only take a few percent cut. always sign up with a rakeback provider before you register at a site and you can cut that down even more. raking it in might be tough, the players are better than they used to be. the beautiful thing is that you can start at a very small level and work your way up as you prove you can win, and so at the very least minimize your losses to an acceptable amount. that takes a bit of patience, which is probably half of the gambling acumen i mentioned. some people are undoubtedly winning a lot, it comes down to your ability in the end.

Which site(s) do you think are reputable?
I often see banner pop-ups for sites that offer to match what you initially put in.
So if you put in $500, you get $1000 in chips.
Sounds like a good deal.
I’m sure this is probably to just suck in the suckers though.

They only match what you initially put as you play. So if you play, say, 500 hands you get $5 back. You get the bonus money back in small increments over a long period of time. As Tempo Gain said, set up a rakeback first.

PokerStars and FullTilt are two reasonable big ones. All the big sites are straight up with the exception of Absolute Poker. Google and you’ll find out more.

Tempo must be a lot smarter than me. No matter how tight I play I always find the game incredibly frustrating, constantly getting outdrawn. Good luck, and don’t raise on 2 7 off (tt advice for free).

I always find it frustrating too  I play omaha high, NL holdem is not good in the living room with the family around

I just started playing the Zynga Poker game on Facebook, and that’s one of the first pieces of advice they give on there.

Is online poker legal??? I was thinking how do international laws govern gambling???

I was under the impression that gambling is illegal in Taiwan. Isn’t this also true for on-line gambling?

It’s on the internet.
It MUST be legal!

Dunno about that, Mr Josefus. Lots of illegal shit happening on the www. Is internet gambling from a Taiwan user on the internet legal or not?

It’s banned in India. Don’t know about Taiwan.

Thanks for that.
That answered a lot of my questions.
I’ll keep playing around on the free site before I lay down any cashola.

I think Taiwan bans people “gathering” to gamble. Since gambling online is a one-man thing…there would be no gathering to speak of?

a few online pros living in taiwan. there is nothing to worry about.

i have been thinking of starting a home game. nothing big, probably like 100/100, 2-3 times a week, but money would still be raked. are laws strict against this?

You plan on raking a home game? And the said ‘home game’ will be held on scheduled intervals of 2-3 times a week? This is a for-profit enterprise, not a home game. You are basically running your own club, a-la Rounders style.

Any time you run a ‘gambling operation’ where you take a cut, it is ostensibly illegal. However, your operation will probably be too small to get busted, like these guys.

play on pokerstars and you can trust it’s not rigged. fulltiilt a second choice, imo. if it’s a new account make sure to put in a bonus code or get rakeback (if you sign up on fulltilt).

the game is ridiculously easy at the really micro levels but has gotten much harder now at anything above $0.50/$1.00USD blinds (not to say it’s not beatable, which it definitely is). the thing that is keeping it soft is interestingly enough, the interest of more asians into the game, who as of right now, are really really horrible players.

as an example: did an bet once with a bunch of friends to see who could win the most playing $0.01/$0.02USD blinds for 24 hours. playing 24-tables at once was able to break something like $13USD/hr of play, still came in second place to my buddy who broke $20USD doing it. i think that might be enough to live on in some places.

i dunno about the laws in taiwan, but i’m sure raking a “home game” is grounds for being illegal anywhere, and i’m pretty sure i would never personally play in such a game. assuming people have enough friends who play to host actual home games, then there’s already bad signals about the type of person that would go to a raked “home game” no?

and macau is only like 3 hours away… which btw is a pretty neat place to visit. last time i played was in macau last weekend while on vacation there in one of the pokerstars appt tournament events. the asian players there were really really bad. much worse than even the bad players in vegas. they’re about where the us was in say 2004 with regard to play.

not even close to the same thing. even the 1c/2c USD games are way more like “real” poker than play money. you might learn some terrible habits playing the free site.

pokerace.com was recommended to me to play online. First thing I see is “illegal to play in Taiwan, USA… etc.” wth? Anyone know why… or this just simply ignored.
Or can you recommend another site, fully aware of poker stars, and now that Nevada is offering online licensing again… online poker is coming back strong.

My brother has one friends who is living only by playing online poker. I met the guy once when he came to Barcelona. He is a little nuts, but is a mind prodigy… he can tell the odds on one combination or the other very quickly, he has a system in place, and never deviates from it. He “works” for 8-10 hours everyday, hooked on some poker websites and earning money.

He has been living abroad in various countries, Korea for 8 months, Thailand for 6 months… guy moves around.

I don’t think I’d be able to do the same… I don’t have enough patience. Other friends of my brother tried, but they are too emotional and sometimes this makes difficult for them to stick to the probabilistic system.

There are a few pros out there… and they earn money that other people lose. So I, for one, won’t enter in those sites to fill their pockets.
