Tennis elbow

the bear has been stricken down with tendonitis in his right arm (mainly from playing squash i think). it has gotten worse over 6 weeks time…have tried acupuncture etc. to no good effect…anyone got any ideas? it is very painful and is making my working life a misery (hard to type, use a mouse). if it goes on i might have to stop using a PC…

  1. Cataflam or other anti-inflamatory
  2. Panadol or other painkillers
  3. Use warm packings
  4. Start practicing your left hand in case you would loose right arm

I got the same thing, and I make my living at my keyboard. Here’s how I’ve gotten better over the last four weeks:

  1. Take a vacation so that you can get away from the keyboard.
  2. See 1.
  3. If you can’t get away, try this: A) Switch the mouse to your opposite hand. It’s weird at first, and it slows you down, but you get used to it, and it gives your regular arm a rest. You just need to remember to switch the button configuration at Control Panel > Mouse (for Windows). B) Use more hotkeys. Seriously. You can do everything on a keyboard, you know. Here are some that most people don’t know about:
Alt + Tab: Switch between open windows
Alt: Go to commands at top of window
    Tab: Scroll down through links
Shift + Tab: Scroll up through links
Control + Tab: Switch between open tabs in Firefox
In Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Advanced > General and check “Always use the cursor keys to navigate within pages”. This is the coolest thing.
  4. Hold your arm to your side crucifixion style, and stretch your hand back. This is what my physiotherapist told me to do, and it helps.
  5. See a trained physiotherapist for professional therapy and advice instead of looking for help on a chat forum.
  6. If you have tens of thousands of words to type, get Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition software.

I am just getting over right hand tennis elbow after about 3 months. I switched my mouse to the left hand (it took some time to get used to). I also have to make a very difficult conscious effort not to use my right arm. I probably would have recovered quicker if I used a sling to keep my arm immobilized, but I didn’t.
I tried 2 different hospitals (both just passed out anti-inflamatory, muscle relaxers and pain killers), I also tried the Chinese torture guy who bent the hell out of my wrist trying to align everything before sticking me with needles and hooking me up to the electro-shock device.
After going through this, I came to the realization that there is no quick cure. The only thing to do is rest it as much as possible.

any recco’s for a physiotherapist? this is exactly why im using a chat forum…i want to avoid the quacks who dish out pills or stick jars on your back to no avail…

oh and re. no. 4…crucifixion style means arms out not at your side no?

most of my keyboard work is using the scroll/arrow keys as im a proofreader/editor…ive got an arm rest which helps…will give the mouse switch a try…

tks 4 all the advice…

I had good physio on my neck recently at the hospital across from Daan park on the corner of Heping E Road and Jianguo.

Can you described what you had done?

Well… I’m pretty tall and have (had) a very pronounced stoop, this lead to me getting pains all over my body. The physio basically put me on this machine that had a harness on it and some sort of weighted cantilever system at the other end. As the machine (gently)pulled tight that forced my neck to go straight. I had this for an hour a day for 6 days and they added 1kg everyday to make my neck stronger.
Now the pains have gone and I am visibly taller.
