Tesla Cars in Taiwan

Saw a friggin bright Pepto Bismol pink Tesla in the hood. I know it’s a Tesla but man, that was sad.

That must be expensive as hell. There’s a reason why most Teslas are white, they charge out the ass for any color other than their default white.

Its almost certainly a vinyl wrap.

Kinda funny that in 2010 we wanted to wrap a company car with an all over wrap. There literally was no place that wanted to quote it. Today in my evening walk there are 5 wrapping shops I pass.

They’ve changed the free color from time to time, it varies by model, and maybe by location too.

It might have been this pink Model 3 rental from Tesla Rental in Taiwan. Model S/3/X/Y | UDRIVE

Luxgen, the local Taiwanese car brand, have launched a Model Y clone called the N7.

It’s notable because the base model is priced under $1m TWD. There’s also a 7-seat version for $1.35m, which seems like a bargain - the only 7-seater electric cars currently available in Taiwan are the Tesla Model X and the Kia EV9, both costing over $3m.

It looks pretty decent, with all the typical Tesla features plus Android Auto/Apple Carplay. Looks nice too, might be a good first electric car.

Unfortunately Luxgen cars have a reputation for being unreliable, but then again so do Teslas.

Edit: Fixed the car name :upside_down_face:

I already looked into it, not impressed…

What don’t you like about it?

Edit: Video of the 7-seat N7. Really wish they’d sell the 7-seater Model Y in Taiwan.

important thing is, do they work with Tesla charger?

Also almost everyone’s going to be using superchargers to charge their car, never seen EV parking space in Taiwan at all.

Chargers in Taiwan are standardized. Tesla allows other cars to charge at superchargers.
So it should be no problem to charge there.

Are you sure about this? I have not once seen another car than tesla at the charger.

Also Tesla site lists:

Non-Tesla Supercharging is currently limited to EV drivers who live in the following countries:
North America: United States. Canada.
Europe: Austria. Belgium. Denmark. Finland. France. Germany. Hungary. Iceland. Ireland. Italy. Luxembourg. The Netherlands. Norway. Romania. …
Asia Pacific: Australia. New Zealand. Mainland China. South Korea.

Because the charging network is by far #1 reason to stay with Tesla right now for me here in Taiwan. If the network opens up I would be much more open to getting something else.

You are right here is the link to check

But it is just a matter of time until they allow it in Taiwan. Their list of countries grows fast, I assumed Taiwan was already open for all.

It’s actually pretty damned important because vast majority of Taiwanese are going to NEED superchargers if they have an electric car. Unless you have your own garage or can extend a cord out by your first floor property/townhouses.

I actually asked a Tesla dealership and that’s what they said. You’re more or less dependent on superchargers.

Slower to accelerate and to charge and lacking many features as compared to other options at similar price point. Nothing “bad” per se, just not compelling for me. :man_shrugging:

Yep, that’s it. Conspicuous.

What are you comparing it to? The only similarly priced electric car is the Nissan Leaf.

That’s actually a really good point, I was just looking for myself, (i.e. vs importing) but locally you’re right, it would certainly be the best option.

Extremely comon in Taiwan, pretty much every car park, both publicly and privately owned, I’ve used in the last year has at least one spot.

Good news - the 2024 Model 3 Highland refresh is now available to order in Taiwan:
https://www.tesla.com/zh_tw/model3/design#overview

New key features:

  • Rear LCD screen for rear passengers
  • Updated comfortable suspension
  • Updated sound-proofing
  • New interior with atmospheric cabin lights
  • Ventilated seats for front passengers
    Plus lots more stuff

Bad news, the basic RWD model is $1.7m TWD. That’s ~$54,700 USD. This is meant to be Tesla’s basic entry-level car, and it only costs ~$1m TWD ($35k USD) in the USA.

This price comparison is relevant because the Model 3 is being shipped to Taiwan from the USA (Germany only makes Model Ys).

Tesla also removed the control stalks. Wipers, blinkers, and horn are now all buttons on the steering wheel. Gear change is done on the central touch screen.

Hopefully we’ll see a similar price cut for the Model Y in Taiwan:
