The best gin out there?

Quick one: I’ve become somewhat of a gin drinker in the last couple years but haven’t really strayed far from Gordon’s (London Dry Gin)

Any recommendations on a better quality/class of the bitter, luverly stuff?

Iv always preferred BOMBAY

Tanquerey is my favourite. Needs to be export strength. Bombay Sapphire I feel is a tad over spiced, but again, export strength stuff is still pretty nice.

My alcoholic uncle gave me some great advice about drinking gin - you really need some mixer such as tonic water or vermouth to take off the after taste, but you really do not need very much - just a splash will do. That way you really get the best out of the gin taste.

Hence my mix for martinis - 8 parts gin to 1 part vermouth. Gin, cocktail glass, cocktail shaker, spirits measure, long stirring spoon and ice are all kept in the freezer overnight, the Martini Extra Dry Vermouth in the fridge along with the Seville olives. Always stir, never shake otherwise you’ll bruise the gin. You might not notice the effect of bruised gin after one martini, but after your fifth or sixth you’ll start regretting it.

Mother’s ruin

If you’re willing to fork over the cash, Hendrick’s is an awesome gin, for both gin tonics and martinis.

For the everyday gin, my favorite is still Gordon’s. Beefeater has too sharp an aftertaste and Bombay Sapphire is a little overpowering.

As for Tanqueray, I’ve only had it once while drunk, so I don’t think I should be giving opinions on that :stuck_out_tongue:

I bet if you go to the Food forum you will find a thread just like this one.

Tanqueray is my favourite. Bombay is OK too, but inexplicably more expensive. Probably as Bacardi (who invented it) have put their prices up recently. It seems all Diageo products have suffered a price hike recently - Johnnie Walker, for example…

Hendricks is interesting, but doesn’t really taste of gin.

I quite like Plymouth Gin too, but it’s a bit expensive.

Tanqueray 10, with Hendricks a close second. But then again, my motto is all gin is good gin, hic.

I guess it depends on how many juniper berries you like. Personally i find Gordons and Beefeater are heavy on the junipers and drink Bombay. I haven’t heard of or tried Hendricks, is it available here?

Yeah, at a ridiculous price. In the UK (where it’s from) it’s the same price as Bombay.

Thats good to know I’ll ask my folks for a bottle when they next come over

Hendrick’s isn’t something you’lll find at your local Carrefour, but it’s readily available in most liquor stores

Je praat van “gin”, maar wat van de moeder, Oude Jenever.

Wilt u een kopstoot?

“The first step to drinking jenever properly is to keep the glass on the table, bend down to the glass and take the first sip without holding the glass. Once this traditional first sip is accomplished one can drink the rest of the drink normally.”

I like a G&T during the hot weather. Bombay, Boodles and even Gordons will do nicely.

Add 3 or 4 drops of bitters, Angostura, for a slightly smoother ‘Pink Gin.’

After 3, who cares what brand the gin is?

Had a bottle of similar stuff a few months ago. Lovely. A real crisp gin taste drunk neat. Can you get it here?

Didn’t the Dutch invent gin?

Yes, gin is a Dutch invention, still known as jenever in NL. I’ve not seen jenever for sale in TW. If you fly KLM business class, you receive a Delft miniature house that contains … jenever. Juniper berries were originally added to disguise the off-taste in ordinary grade spirits. Failed vodka, if you will.

Hey does anyone know where I can buy a decent dry vermouth in Taipei? Nearest I’ve found is Martini Bianco, and that’s sweet not dry… I want to make some Martinis…

BTW, I love Bombay Sapphire gin, but Hendricks is amazing (although crazy overpriced in Taiwan!)

I had some Seagrams here in South Africa. Way too bitter…

Gin drinkers on this thread might be interested to know that as part of our Paddy’s Day entertainment we’ll be offering G&Ts by the pint for $190 until 7pm today. (Thereafter the normal price is $320 - still pretty cheap!)

Made with Tanqueray. The glasses are not nonic glasses (we need all of them for the beer!), but hold over 550ml*, and they’re chilled. And the gin is chilled, and the tonic is chilled. Loads of ice. And conveniently the weather’s lovely this afternoon.

(We also have limited amounts of Bombay and Beefeater if you want to do the Pepsi challenge…!)

Now, I have to go off and sort out the diddley-dee music…

*it seems that in Taiwan a “pint” is anywhere from 440ml to 568ml - but I’m talking about an imperial pint here (568ml) - close enough! Our Guinness and Samuel Smith glasses are 575ml oversized for 568ml of liquid. The Orions are 510ml to brim.

What a coincidence this thread came back to life to day - I’m treating myself to a bottle of Gordons as we speak, as an early birthday gift, and for completing this week’s To Do List timeously…
