My mom and sister are going to come visit me in Kaohsiung next year so i was looking up a nice hotel they could stay at.
They would only be in the hotel a couple of nights hopefully, because I’m planning to take them to the east and make them stay in home-stays during the week they’re here, but for the time they do sleep in Kaohsiung i want them to have a nice hotel. Right now i’m thinking the Grand Hi Lai Hotel is the best. It seems to have a lot of stuff crammed in that building (huge dept store, spa, club, restaurants and all of that) and + it has a Hello Kitty room which i think my sister would want to stay at (she’s young).
So does anyone have any say on the Hi Lai Hotel, or recommendations for a different Hotel? I don’t want it to be too serious and business-like, which is why the Hi Lai is looking nice right now. I also want the Hotel to be nice for foreigners who know absolutely nothing about Taiwan, but i think the Hi Lai should be good for that too.
Any of the big hotels in Kaohsiung will provide more or less the same level of comfort and hospitality. My favorite is the Hi Lai, but I also enjoy the Howard and what used to be the Linden (now called Hanshen I think).
I’d go with the Hai Lai Hotel. It’s conveniently located near lots of food, shopping, and Love River. It’s a good area to walk around in. They can even walk from there to the nightmarket on Wufu or the nightmarket on Zihchiang or the 85 building fairly quickly. Plus, they’ll have Tali Isetan Department Store and whatever that new one is that they’re building next to it, Urban Spotlight/Central Park, and the MRT within 7 minutes walking distance. There’s some sort of mini-amusement park on the top of Tali Isetan that your sister might enjoy. And there’s a big Buddhist temple in front of Hanshin Department Store (the one connected to the Hai Lai Hotel) that your mom might find interesting for a picture or two.
Thanks a lot for the responses. It’s nice to know i had a good hunch for the hotel ;D
One thing though, i went to the hotel website (for the hi-lai) and it said regular room rates for the superior room was 8300 NT$, but then it says you can get the “Best Available Rate” which knocks the room down to 4980 $NTS and adds a whole bunch of stuff like complimentary breakfast and whatnot.
Why is this? Why would the pack be cheaper by a substantial amount? Is this just to make it look like you’re getting a huge discount or am i just missing something…?
ALSO, this is on the topic of my family visiting but not on hotels. Can anyone name some nice places to take my mom and sister over to the south, east, or north?
So far i’ve got Sun Moon Lake, ZhiBen national park, the place with the cool bridge with 8 humps (i don’t know the name… it’s near hualian), and maybe kending and hiking up in Keelung/taipei mountains.
Now… does anyone know anything cooler than this? I would like it to be something outside and visually pleasing, which is why i have all hiking/national park type things here. (BTW i’m sorry if my typing/sentence structure is a little off. I just got all of my wisdom teeth pulled and i’m doped up on oxycodone).

This is just the way the pricing system works. Most hotels have a full rate and then various discounts and packages. In many cases the hotel staff will inform you how to get the best rate when you make a booking. Also it is often cheaper to book online or through a travel agent.
I highly recommend the Hi-Lai as well. My husband and I stayed there last year while on a short visit back to Taiwan. We paid 4,000 a night. Very good value for what you get. The restaurants are nice too, and the service is awesome.
We booked on Asia Rooms (www.asiarooms.com), and I just checked their rates and they seem to be less than what you quoted in your post. Here’s the link…
