The clock on the wall sez 4:20

Totally disagree.

Alcohol addiction develops slower than heroin addiction but once it sets in is harder to kick. The American medical establishment a few years ago made a public statement to the effect that alcohol causes more damage than all the other drugs combined. Anybody who can’t see that alcohol is worse than weed must not have ever had a hangover.

That’s not true. :unamused:

Never tried the stuff myself, but most of my friends back home used it anywhere from occasionally to often.

While I don’t see any harm from occasional use, the ones who smoked it heavily had a noticeable lack of motivation in their lives. I don’t think it was a question of personality type; I think the pot affected their mental functioning. As one bit of evidence, two of the heaviest tokers were forced to quit (by work) or cut back (by fiancee), and both are much more active in “having a life” now.

Another guy I knew, who was, umm, “engaged in the business” for a while (hydroponics store owner), has very obviously fried his brain. As far as I know, he was (and is) only a toker. But maybe he fried his brain on something else – you never know what you get if you buy from a third party, could be laced with PCP or a dozen other things.

I, on the other hand, didn’t smoke through my first three years of university and pulled an accumulative GPA that borderlined on 2.67 (B-). Then I shared a bong with some guy in the summer of 2000 and made Dean’s List. It was the only time I smoked it in school and the only time I earned a high (so to speak) GPA. If that’s not proof that spliff is good for your academics, I don’t know what is!

By the way, the quarter that I was put on academic probation was the quarter when I did the heaviest drinking. So which one is better for you? Hmmm…:ponder:

That pretty much covers where I stand. Nothing more to say.

They always told us that marijuana would make you lazy. Isn’t it embarrasing when cliches turn out to be true. The other cliche is half true too. You know the one about it being a gateway drug…

That’s not true. :unamused:
I’m actually curious now - any details? Like I said at the start, I’m open to being educated.

And as for it making you lazy - I still don’t buy that that’s the weed. I’m sure it’s a factor in declining motivation in some people, no doubt, but it’s only one factor. Again, of the half dozen or so of us who smoked regularly, yeah, a couple got slack and lazy, but the majority still got our degrees, with good marks, and good jobs. I’m pretty sure the two who ended up slacking off were already leaning that way, and the weed just pushed them over. Same goes for the “gateway drug” thing - it’s not just the weed that gets some people onto harder drugs, as evidenced by the huge number of smokers who don’t go on to anything harder.

If they were “always” true they would be facts of life not cliches. Unfortunately for me and half the people I ever found interesting they are cliches that pack a lot of truth.

By the way I sure hope nobody at the concert tomorow offers me any. I haven’t smoked in a couple of years at least and I hate to think what that pungent, sticky, sweet stuff might do to my hard fought for sense of purpose and direction in life…aaahhh. I’ll be the bald guy in a yellow shirt. Please warn me if I am in danger. Thanks. You know what they say about a friend in need.

Please, enlighten us now that I’ve created space for your wisdom.

Houston, we have a problem.

Exactly! Kinda like me telling you how to play a bass guitar or shag a sheep, isn’t it?

But in the interest of getting this thread going:

Do enlighten us…

Ok, I don’t have to go mental with a machine gun to know that it’s wrong to shoot up a town. I don’t have to drive my car over a puppy to know that it may die. In the same way I don’t have to smoke a joint in order to work out that it won’t be beneficial for me. Sure, there may be some medical use for it. There are medical uses for steroids too, does that make it ok to partake, no.

Why try and justify marijuana use? It does harm. I do not think that it should be banned or anything like that, if you use then that is your choice. In making the choice to use you must also take the consequences.

You don’t have to look very far to find the dangers - cyber.law.harvard.edu/evidence99 … lth_1.html

If you hadn’t been smoking away you’d probably be able to google
google.com/search?q=dangers+ … 8&oe=utf-8

I guess only those smokers could find this thread, I hit the link out of curiosity and it was the only post since my last visit, so it has taken some time to reply to your thread.

I know how to play Bass, but know nothing of shagging sheep. Perhaps you can enlighten me, or don’t you remember?

Don’t for one minute try to tell me that there is nothing wrong with the drug, it may be safer than other legal drugs, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t do any harm. Ok,those who got an education while using, hmmm… you must be really smart, imagine what you could have done without using, or can you

If you use, USE, I don’t care, that is your choice. Don’t try and tell us that there is nothing wrong with it. Unless you are from Canada, in that case you are excused

Ok, now I’ve said my bit, it’s your turn now.

I don’t want to hear about your personal experience. Frankly, if you are a user, I am not interested in your experience. Show, with evidence to back it up, how marijuana is safe. Not showing that it is safer than other drugs or alcohol, but how it is in fact safe.

Ok, go.

Hey guys wanna hear about Mexico? I’ve never been there but I read a couple of internet articles about it… hey…where ya goin…

Exactly why I don’t want users to tell me that it’s ok from their personal experience. Good God, I just read on the internet that taking a bottle of sleeping pills could kill me, but because I just read about it it can’t be true, I guess I’ll have to try to find out huh :loco:

It’s thinking like this that explains why you are a user and I am not. :raspberry:

I can read man, reading, if you went to school you’d know that reading is how you can get information without having to do all the work for yourself. You might want to try it.

By your vast wealth of logic I’d have to try every stupid thing on the planet just to check that it is in fact stupid. :loco:

By all means, keep using.

Now, tell me again how it is safe.

I’ve got a feeling the person behind that link probably likes the occasional toke.

Bassman I have in the past really enjoyed your posts so please don’t pretend now that you can’t see the logic in my analogy. Really that would be disapointing.

All this talk about drugs has put me in the mood to clarify some things for myself. Perhaps it will be interesting for you to observe. O.K. here goes… As a person whose life was very nearly destroyed by drugs would I, if I could, take it all back? Honestly no. It doesn’t make any sense. If I wanted to be somebody else I wouldn’t be me anymore so what is the advantage? By the time I was twelve I had smoked pot numerous times, consumed copious amounts of alcohol and for a time had access to as many barbituates and amphetamines as I could stand. My teenage years were a blur of halucinagenics (LSD and magic mushrooms mainly) marijuana and alcohol. I once scored 100% on a law exam scorched out of my skull on peyote buttons. My adult years so far have seen a little of this a lot of that till at one point it looked like the final curtain might just draw nigh on this sad little odditty of a life. Who would I have been, what would I have accomplished if things had gone differently. Who knows. In fact though I am pretty much ok with who I am and to be honest and I frequently get the impression that people who have never done drugs are somehow vaguely stupid. They are quite often excessively literal minded, strident, narrow people. It is like there is some essential bit missing, something to do with curiosity, adventurousness and humor. People who have had “the drug experience” understand just how fragile their carefully developed sense of self really is. They are in fact quite often a lot more humble. I wouldn’t wish my ordeal on anybody but the “stupid stoner” cliche is getting really tired. People use drugs because they want to experiment with other types of consciousness. Hardly something that is entirely stupid. Dangerous yes. Entirely stupid no. Bassman you are going to come back with some kind of comment or another for sure I know. But please accept that in a very real and fundamental sense you have no idea what you are talking about. You don’t know the exquisite highs and you don’t know the hellish lows. It’s like Renton says “Junkies are stupid. But they aren’t that stupid.”

Yes, I can see the logic, somewhat flawed logic. Nothing personal, but, in my opinion, the logic applied here is somewhat flawed.

Let’s take a look at it for a moment.

At first you would suggest that one would need to have personal experience in something in order to know about it. Is that correct?

Someone with experience can give first hand experience. This is true and I don’t take that argument away from you. It is a perfectly valid point and I cannot argue with your personal experience because it is your personal experience. However, personal experience seldom proves science and medicine wrong.

I never once presumed to say that your personal experience is not true. But to say that your personal experience would somehow make medical findings no longer valid is completely beyond my logic.

If the point is saying that one must have personal experience in order to have a valid opinion, your logic is flawed.

Logic on this pattern.
Iraq is not a safe place for westerners… well, I just read that on the internet, it may not be true, ye haw, buy me a ticket, I am a goin’.

So, Iraq is a perfectly safe place because the only information I got about it was from the internet and the Iraqui Minister of Information

Nothing personal here bob, but wouldn’t you think that medical evidence, no matter if it comes off the internet, is valid in making a point in an argument. I didn’t see your point or find it useful or enlightening, and it didn’t do anything to change my opinion.

I also don’t see how this thread has anything to do with my past posts.
