A friend of mine was diagnosed with ‘cannabis induced psychosis’, and it took about four years of intensive anti-pychotic drugs before he stopped hearing voices. The distinction that is made between ‘hard drugs’ and ‘recreational drugs’ is total bullshit: its the way they are used that counts. The law may divide drugs into different classes, because thats the only way they can do it. Doesn’t mean we should.
There is recreational use of drugs, and non-recreational use of drugs. It is possible to use any drugs in either way. Some jack’n’jills, a few bottles of chianti and a heroin laced ciggarette could be a hugely enjoyable and civilised evening, and cause no bad effects. Compulsive smoking of weed can, and does, cause all the destructive effects that are normally associated with hard drugs.
Mrwill is exactly correct. The only difficulty is that with some drugs it is an aweful lot more difficult to achieve that level of self control. Used properly heroin is a great drug, but how many people can use it properly. Not many I would suggest.
I have this thing with falling off tall buildings. I know the first time I’d try it, I’d never be able to stop myself before I died from it so I stay away from being in a situation where I might be tempted to try it. Just say no.
A few weeks ago in San Francisco I drove past a street guy lying on his back in the middle of the sidewalk with people walking around him. He was squirming around, eyes closed, with a huge grin on his face. I jumped to the conclusion that he had scored hard drugs, but in light of your comment I now think he may have “compulsively” smoked some weed.
You are touchy. I enjoy drinking. Doesn’t make me an alchoholic. I think weed is great for some people. Its just not perfect, although people sometimes say that it is. I used to smoke, and the only reason i stopped was because the bad effects started to outweigh the good.

The weed is not good for you or healthy, but the ill effects do not warrant the current prohibition. Too many people use one or two extreme examples to try to “prove” how bad it is.
I think it’s fun, but it’s definitely not worth going to jail over. I do without it just fine.
Okay… but I still think marijuana is not comparable to hard drugs.
A while ago I checked out what the web had to say about pot. I really came to love the sites promoting the US gov’s view of marijuana. You would get stuff like “41% of students surveyed reported that if they read while stoned, they remembered less of what they had read.” (59% remembered the same amount or more? Hey it’s a study drug!) Along with similar quotes, that made up the section titled"Damage to the Intellect." I put it to you that these people think we are stupid.
Pot may not be perfect. I will say this for it though, even if you smoked all this
you would live.
I wonder, when the feds go burn down someone’s marijuana field if they realize the irony?

Good for my parents!
Oh I think the cops know damn well actually. Back home, whenever they burned a crop, you’d usually see a fairly hefty number conveniently standing downwind, and then further down there’d be a pretty big throng of locals too.
