The formosan black bear
They go to around 400 lbs AFAIK. That would be around 350 lb heavier a bear than I’d feel comfortable around.
I’ve never seen one but I know a couple of people who have. Only for an instant though – they’re extremely timid.
That’s still a big bear as far as black bears are concerned. Ack, I wouldn’t want to encounter one of these.

What sort of ungulates or other larger prey animals are there on Taiwan?

Politicians, mobsters, news crews, insane shopping bag monkeys …

muntjacs, deer, humans

I don’t think they take large animals. They eat mostly leaves, buds, fruit, roots, insects, small animals and carrion.

They’re a bit like Australians – eats roots shoots and leaves.

So always store your small bags safely before heading out to the mountains.

I thought it was a bit weird that the Taipei Times ran that photo of the ranger with the lame, bad-English sign with its ambiguous illustration. No comment from them at all … like as if there isn’t a single editor working there anymore who could notice that the sign is quite unhelpful. They ran it like it was a good sign.

Taiwan’s English level is unbearable.

I thought Australians smoked shoots and leaves.
