I watched the film Oppenheimer recently (bored out of my skull) and noticed that ‘Russians’ was used a lot. That was not used in the time the film was set. It was ‘Soviets’ (the only times I heard it in the film was during the scene with the president). Seems they used ‘Russians’ so the easily led continues to think Russians bad. Nudge units and that.
That’s a conspiratorial perspective. Another way to look at it is the Soviet Union ended over 30 years ago…
You think people all just stopped using the term Russian when the Soviet Union was formed or something? Seems unlikely. By which I mean definitely not the case. You can find quotes of Presidents referring to Russians, McCarthy referring to Russian spies, etc.
I think perhaps the simplest explanation is that the average modern viewer wouldn’t even know what the USSR was. Or what WW2 was, for that matter. Half the audience probably thought Oppenheimer was fiction.
‘Russian’ was used more often than ‘Soviet’, just as ‘Nazi’ was used, but ‘German’ more so.
I remember in the 1972 Canada-Soviet Hockey Series (first game played against Canadian professional players) the Soviet embassy had to request Canadtan TV stations to refer to the team as ‘Soviets’ instead of ‘Russians’ ( the CTV announcer mentioned this with a chuckle, before ging on to constantly refer to the ‘Russians’.
It was a union of many countries. Soviet ≠ Russian
When talking about the soviet government, then people say Russian as they effectively were controlling state affairs of Soviet Union.

Do you seriously think that “Brigitte Macron is a man” counts as a conspiracy theory? In Blighty at least, we just refer to this as “taking the piss”.
