By weird, I mean names that have nothing to do with what the DPP stands for, did, or is trying to do, not even tangentially. They are just derogatory names that the KMT, TMD and possibly the CCP wumaos came up with just for the sake of being derogatory.
For example, when I call the TPP TMD, it’s because the party’s Pinyin initials are literally Taiwan Mingzong Dang. It is formed exactly like how KMT came from its Wade-Gile initials. Sure, people who call the TPP TMD is doing so because it is also the initial of a common curse phrase 他媽的, but at least it’s tangentially related.
Not so for the names GMD and TMD have been trying to coin for the DPP and its supporters. Names like the earliest 綠蛆 (green maggot), to the most common one used during the Tsai era, 塔綠班 (Ta-green-ban), to their new favorite 綠共 (green communists), none of them has got anything remotely related to the DPP.
For me, even Trump coined nicknames, such as Crooked Hilary or Sleepy Joe, as unfounded as these claims seem to me, at least are related to certain personal traits or GOP narrative.
I guess from the Taliban and communist puns, they are trying to imply the DPP is authoritarian, but it’s a claim so ridiculous, I found it hard to understand why the traditional Chinese internet is blanketed with such usages. Especially when the leaders of KMT kept visiting and kowtowing to the actual Chinese Communist Party.
Calling the DPP green communists for the recall movement and for the police investigating KMT politicians for abusing their powers by breaking the Personal Data Protection Act to get their own recall movement going, or sending police officers to harass citizens who petitioned to recall KMT legislators, is just ridiculous. The DPP is following the Recall Act, which the KMT and the TMD just modified last December. KMT and TMD legislators raised the bar for the signing petitions, requiring copy of National ID card, and required more petitions to initiate a recall election. The DPP followed the law to recall KMT legislators, and KMT so far failed to reach the bar in their attempts and tried to forge records and break their own law, and somehow that makes the DPP the authoritarians?
Also, the pan-Blue seems livid when the police prosecuted their leaders for breaking the Assembly and Parade Act. However, KMT legislators were the ones against amending the Assembly and Parade Act for the past 30 years. So again, the police were just following the law that the KMT made.
If 綠蛆 (green maggot), 塔綠班 (Ta-green-ban), and 綠共 (green communists) are so baseless, how exactly are they getting so much traction?
