The Matsu Casino referendum : it's a Go

Not enough time too post a link but it will be hot news on TV tonight.

Penghu did not received the favor but this new direction is worrying in all aspects.
Got to run, sorry for short post

So Matsu island has received the green light to start legal gambling. It won’t become the local Macau but many fear it will detoriarate the island’s beauty, attract crime and so on which will outweigh “prosperity” in terms of labor.
There are some rumors that non-identified sources see this as a potential local money laundering solution keeping the funds in Taiwan as not loosing them overseas.

TV showed the mock-up of how Matsu should / could look few years from now. Not bad at all if they stick to the playgrounds build inside the water and not not raping the island.

Here’s something from the Taipei Times:

They hit the ‘Jackpot’ …

Yep, they voted for it … they all going to make big piles of money …

Sad. But yeah what the fuck else are you going to do with a small island chain of outstanding natural beauty, some cool history and lovely beaches?

I mean really? What else could you possibly do but build a casino?

Fuck I hate Taiwan some times.

Why there? Why not in Mailiao backwater instead?

If there’s strict control and oversight of development, I’m OK with it, but Taiwan doesn’t have a very good record in this area, sadly… I’d hate to see a beautiful place marred by a clone of the Cotai Strip.

The sweet smell of money did it …

Why? I mean, seriously, what’s so bad about a casino? Is it going to dump toxic waste all over the beaches? Fill the air with horrible industrial odors? Are you terrified of playing cards ever since that incident in Steve Wynn’s hot tub?

What is wrong with it? A few things off the bat:

This country has a seriosu problem with organized crime. This is a giveaway for money laundering.

Yes, it will do terrible damage to the environment to build up a casino, international airport, and luxury hotels.

This country has a serious problem with over-construction. It has a problem with big businesses taking over scenic areas that could and sometimes did provide a good livelihood for locals. In general I am against megaprojects that bring nothing to a locality but turn it into a generic high end destination which usually has a short life.

I oppose this because it has zero vision for sustainability, for beauty, for working with the local environment and history. It is the dream of idiot developers so they can make a ton of money developing a pristine and very pretty part of the world.

I am opposed to this because I know it will be shabby. The plans look good on paper but it will not look good in the end, or it will soon turn to crap. That’s the reality of construction here. Beauty will be turned into shit.

This is about making a lot of money for a few people. And a lot of empty promises about sharing the wealth

I am opposed to this because it was won over by lies and there is little reason to believe a casino on Matsu will succeed.

Yeah that’s the issue isn’t it, Chris. If this were a different country I might not be opposed.
