I’ve been having lots of meetings currently about how productive we are, so many, in fact, that we don’t have any time left to be actually productive. The updates haven’t actually changed at all in the last two years so the same thing gets said over-and-over and it “all sounds promising” but nothing is actually done :laughing: I think this is fairly common from what I gather?

I have no complaints, other than I’d like to earn more.

I mean honestly I have little to complain about work at this point, except I want more of it.

No complaints but we took a chance and hired a 18 year old out of school. She has renewed my faith in young people. Hard working, good attitude, no drama.

Last person I hired out of Uni to do social media content management for us recommended us to do a Trans princess collection as one of her first ideas :melting_face:. Maybe best not to hire out of university after they get brainwashed by crazy academics. She was fired because she was so lazy.

I’ve had a fun day… in the office at 7am to setup two NFL games and some Asin woman’s volleyball. Done by 9am. Go home for some R&R and sweet devotion from my wife then watch a movie and fall asleep as the rain comes in. Back to office 9pm for some Italian Spanish and UK football… last games start at 3am but I will be done by 2am. All feeds are setup but some feeds are colour bars before they switch to the stadium event held at. Play chess in between football games and post on forums.

My wife has 3 days off from today while woe is me holds the fort. Going into snuggle up to her as nice cool temperatures here now.

We took her to an event we hosted in Manchester. She barely helped with setting up and was on her phone. I ordered McDonalds to eat and we all ate quickly because we still needed to set up the night before the event. She saw everyone finished up quickly to start working again and just sat there for another 30min eating slowly watching everyone.

On the day of the event she was responsible for taking videos and pictures. She went MIA and we found out later from another employee she left to her room because she was feeling anxious.

We booked out a nightclub after the day event for a party and she got super drunk and the next day she was hungover and didn’t do anything with us. I gave everyone an extra day after the event to enjoy Manchester. We went out for dinner as a team and she kept texting us when we were going to come back because she needed to use my phone to order food off Uber eats.

We went back and she ordered a bunch of food. She ordered 6 items from wagamama and the next day we found out she didn’t eat any of it because she felt too sick.

On the way back we stopped at the rest stop and when we went in she told me “go get me some fries” like an order.

I fired her the next day. She was just so lazy and that trip of the last straw. We put everyone up in. 5 star hotel too. Not many employers would do that. She had absolutely no clue on how to behave professionally. It was like taking care of a child.

I think she got a reality check after that because she always said social media mangers are an in demand job and pay really well. I think she’s misunderstanding average salary because the social media manager of large corporations do get paid well but there’s not that many of those jobs. It’s like going to a finance program thinking you’ll just make 6 figures because you saw investment bankers can make that much after school.

Oh yeah. We looked at her photos and videos after firing her and realized she didn’t get a single photo or video of me as her boss at the event when I’m speaking or hosting guests. Imagine not taking any pictures of your boss at his event :flushed:

It’s good you fired her. I think most managers are too weak and shit to stand up to the work ethic of popularising effectively doing nothing in the UK, and finding weird ways to justify/normalise that kind of man-child behaviour.

I’ve taken a stance of firing people quickly if they’re not right and rewarding the people who should be rewarded with raises.

One of my higher paid employees is actually just a picker packer in the warehouse. He doesn’t have a managerial position and is pretty much at the bottom. He’s not particularly talented at anything and is content at his position. But he gets paid really well because he does all the things no one likes to do and makes no fuss about it and does it on his own. That’s the type of person I’m trying to keep and keep giving them raises so they stay.

When I got made redundant during the wave of redundancies inflicting the tech industry in the West not long ago, my LinkedIn feed was full of Gen-Zers-mostly women-also caught up in the redundancies, crying about their mental health and how bad they have it. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have complete sympathy for them, as it was hard for me too and probably harder for a lot of them, but if I was hiring, I wouldn’t go anywhere near somebody like that. Maybe I’m just a cold bastard, but I’d pick somebody who composes themselves well during times of crisis and, if they must post on LinkedIn, posts about the skills they’re gaining, not sympathy seeking. I really can’t believe this kind of thing has become normalised.

Bit of a generalisation, there’s a lot of whingy cunts out there of all ages, genders, creeds and colours.

Indeed, but I’m not generalising. I’m just recounting what I experienced during that time. Amidst the countless Gen-Z posts like what I described, I did see a handful from other cohorts of society, but they tended to be less emotionally-charged, maybe self-deprecating at the fact that they had gotten to this point of sympathy-posting on LinkedIn, and highlighted the strengths they’d bring to an employer. Nothing wrong with that. The Gen-Z posts I’m talking about (on LinkedIn remember - not Instagram) openly brought up mental health problems, nervous breakdowns, etc. That doesn’t seem like a sensible strategy to me for finding work and makes me wonder how well such people could cope with pressure at work, but maybe that’s just the world we’re entering now.

When I see that on the profile or on the resume. I throw it in the garbage. It screams they are going to be a problem to me :man_shrugging:

Workday-based job application portals always ask this. But then workday also quotes 99.9% uptime whilst also being down for between 4 and 12 hours every Saturday for “routine maintenance” which is not included in their uptime calculations, fucking arseholes.

Yeah email signatures with pronouns, or qualification abbreviations at the end of the name, is a turn-off for me. I don’t give a fuck if you are a CEng BSc Hons. you jumped-up twat, all that tells me is you’re in crippling student debt and you’ve landed yourself a shit job to attempt to keep up with the interest on it.

I’m having the exact same problem! If there’s anything coming up, they think the solution is just arranging more meetings. But then, there’s no time actually work. I am one step away from showing up to the next meeting with a copy of Cal Newport’s Deep Work. :sweat_smile:

About 10 years ago we took on 2 apprentices both under 18 one of them lasted about 6 months after repeated absences he came in late one day to find me resetting his Mac before being shown the door.
The other one who had a bad reputation from school and confessed to having issues. He is on gardening leave at the moment and will start a new position with one of our competitors next month.
Happy to see him move on to a better position thats not currently available in our company, will be good for his personal and professional development to see how different companies work.

Why’s he on gardening leave?

I was pretty bad at school, then got fired from my first job, then suddenly was really successful to the point of imposter syndrome, now less successful :smiley:

Because he is going to one of our competitors, we are not going to leave him working on current projects that we are bidding against them on. He is still working his one month notice so the choice is have him doing menial stuff around the factory and studio or gardening leave.
