Dr. Gunther von Hagens, of Parkinsons, at age 81. Inventor of “plastination” and a quasi artist placing plastinized corpses in museum displays, he died on 24 July.
Born in Poland in 1945, his family’s unsuccessful race to the Allies ended in Greiz, Eastern Germany. He was a product of vestigial German culture fused to Soviet dogma. That fusion manifests in his art.
“My ambition is to democratize anatomy,” von Hagens told the Independent in 2007. “Before 1998, when I came on the scene, anatomy books contained no lifelike poses. Now they all have them. I gave anatomy life.”
