It’s horrifying, that’s for sure.

Now it’s reported only two survivors with 179 dead. Tragic

My fear too whenever i fly. Well it seems the pilots did well to get the plane on the runway and do a gear up landing if that was the last resort. However perhaps they (maybe?) could have done more to slow the aircraft to minimum because sliding on the runway on bare metal means not using brakes when the tires are on the runway and not sure if they used reverse thrust? Or was there a chance to divert to a field with a longer runway? All questions. NO answers as yet of course.

I don’t see how a bird strike would mean no landing gear. As some have said some other failure, unless I’m missing something

From the vid seems the reverse thrust was selected and the runway should be ample length for landing (with gear that is)

even with flap 15 it should be around 1500 meters , didnt find the figure for no wheels landing though.
flap 40 will reduce that to around 1300 meters on dry runway with max load.

They had an expert on DW and he was also skeptical about the bird strike damaging the landing gear to that point. Possible but not seen frequently. Not to say hardly.

He also mentioned a bird taking down an engine and still landing - IMHO Hudson flight comes to mind, two engines damaged. Or flaps/wing damage. If it is one, the plane might still land.

Again, as mentioned before, the length of the runway comes to mind. They were landing hot, too fast.

At least in the old country we have a nice, cushy cornfield after the runway…and then the highway.

One flight deck personnel, one passenger so far rescued alive. Hope they survive.

Wow amazing flight deck personnel rescued? Thought any chance of survival would be in the back. So sad not more saved though. The Azerbijian plane crash had many more survivors.

The surviving pilot can tell us a lot more about what happened I imagine.

Flight deck or crew? It makes sense at the extreme front or back of the plane. They’re probably in really bad shape anyway :sleepy:

i thought the same no flaps but reverse on? Also i mentioned too that the gear should be able to be lowered manually.

The video (if it is the actual landing) suggests that it has landed (with gear up) and stayed on the runway, but got to the far end (and beyond), suggesting that maybe it landed ‘long’. Time will tell of course, hopefully the Black Boxes have survived.

140 KIAS.

The proper final approach speed varies with weight, but a good target at typical operating weight is 140 KIAS. With landing gear down and flaps at 30 degrees, set the power to maintain 140. This configuration should hold airspeed with a good descent angle toward the runway.

The guy on the vid says he flies the same type of aircraft made a few observations:

  1. flaps are not down as they should be (he suggested flap 40 in this case)
  2. gear should have been lowered manually or attempt made, not sure if an attempt was made and they can be lowered manually with gravity.
  3. one reverse is open, while one not suggesting engine and hydralic failure on one side. And that reverser should not normally be used on belly landing except when stopping distance is critical as it was in this case with no flaps. Because they can cause an aircraft to veer off the runway , which is not good. This airplane stayed on the runway.
  4. Also he mentioned he is not sure where the touch down was on landing and of course that is very important.
  5. and that the concrete barrier should not be there as localizer antenna dont need such a strong concrete base.
  6. and i think he said data suggest approach speed was 150 knots (which is not too far off the 140knots suggested in normal landing).

obviously you dont want to drop the approach speed too low because then you can crash short of the runway, which is very bad, such as the Asiana 777 crash at SFO. they were below correct speed and just scraped the sea wall on approach. A bit faster and they would have cleared and the accident would not have happened.

Just brutal. The plane basically belly flopped, with predictably awful results.

yeah the guy mentioned one reverse operates the hydraulics for one engine while the other engine operates the other. He also mentioned reverse thrust should not be used on belly landing except when stopping as fast as possible is needed because it can cause the plane to veer off the runway and that is not a good thing.
He said hydraulics are required to raise the gear but are used to lower the gear but gear can be manually lowered so he questioned why this was not done.

My pet theory is that because emergencies are so rare in the last several decades that pilots are not as used to them as they may have been in the past when all sorts of shit happens apparently (which in itself is another issue) and pilots were more used to abnormal happenings and better at handling them. This crew most likely never had such an event happen ever and may not have exercised the absolute correct handling procedure.

Crew have these placards and also read outs that can give them exact directions on most emergencies so they can follow. Except in the MAX case where pilots were deliberately not told of the MCAS feature !! Obviously a huge problem.

But most emergencies have read outs on the digital display listing what to do and in what order. Obviously everything takes time and its important to catch your breath and advise crew to prepare for emergency landing and for flight deck crew to work out a procedure by the book before actually taking action. Which means they may have to circle a bit to work out exactly what the plan is before executing the approach/landing. Etc.

You have to stay ahead of the plane or else the plane is ahead of you and thats not good.

ex gf was a stewardess for Cathay Pacific for 7 years and she loved flying and was never afraid except one time landing back in Kaitak there was some sort of emergency apparently and they were told to prepare for emergency landing but not told exactly what…that was a bit scary she said. But the rest of her 3000 plus flights were all good, only thing was turbulence at times.

Here though the landing gear was up. That’s obviously like lesson one for operating any kind of aircraft. I seem to remember too the control tower will tell you on the off chance you forget. Anything’s possible, but I’d stick with mechanical fault.

Still should been able to land, part of it maybe pilots rely too much on Tech and not skill and problem managment, was also case in the Asiana crash in USA and Japan
