The Plane Crash Thread

South Korea plane crash: Passenger aircraft carrying 181 crashes at Muan Airport; at least 28 dead. Video

The flight was travelling from Thailand when it crashed. This is believed to have been caused by “contact with birds, resulting in malfunctioning landing gear” as the plane attempted to land at the airport in the country’s southwest, reported the South Korean news agency.

Hopefully birds with feathers, not something more mechanical.

If you’ve seen the video already, that “at least 28” looks very optimistic.

No thanks.

This one happened a few days ago. Putin apologizes for it being Ukraine’s fault.

Azerbaijan plane crash: Putin dials Azeri Prez to apologise for ‘tragic incident’ that killed 38

Up to 62 dead now.
While a bird might’ve caused it, in the end people will remember it as another Boeing 737 gone down. sad

From Wiki, two days before the aeroplane had a problem, needed make unscheduled stop. It’s older plane, ex Ryan Air.

Yeah, call me skeptical. Bird strike seems to be the excuse du jour. First, they tried to get away with saying the Azerbaijani plane was hit by birds… now we know it’s heavily likely it was shot down by Russian defense systems. Now this Jeju Air crash was caused by birds too? Even though it had serious mechanical problems on a previous flight just a day or two ago? This was clearly a plane that wasn’t flight worthy and should’ve been grounded due to mechanical issues. Korea hasn’t had a serious crash like this in two decades. Heads will definitely roll.

Christ, that’s horrific.

But, it needs to be asked. What was a concrete wall doing at the end of the runway like that? Surely that is just asking for trouble. It didn’t seem like it was protecting houses or the terminal building or anything.

Sick. Literally booked a ticket with them 2 days ago. I realize that I don’t have anything to worry about, but sure doesn’t feel good! Sure hope my girlfriend doesn’t see this…

Accident now being blamed on landing gear malfunction.

Exactly, what a poor design. At least have a gentle dirt embankment or gravel or something but to have a wall there is nuts. Heaven forbid a plane ever overshoots in general.

The airfield can’t go on forever. Whatever is at the edge, it’s over.

looked like if it had more runway it would not have exploded into a fireball and most everyone on board will have been saved. However, puzzling is that the planes gears are up but they are on the runway. Perhaps not enough time to assess the situation and prepare for a landing. One would think that since they were on the runway at least the gear would have been let down. Nobody knows at this early stage though exactly what happened. But just from the surface it appears at least the gear should have been let down since they have properly aimed for the runway and were on the runway. Maybe they had all engines out and the pilots thought they needed to keep gears up and flaps up to make it to the runway. That they did but overan at the end it appears and fire engulfed the aircraft. If that was the decision, they almost made it. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 and all that . What a terrible way to go. Birds are dangerous. And can disable both engines. Look at the Hudson landing. That was the first time they proved a water landing could be successful. Previously the insider thought was putting on life jackets was just an exercise and that water landings are generally thought to be essentially a crash landing just the same.

Many runways are at airports that have later been built up with buildings around it, etc and there is not the luxury of an over run area. However, some airports have specially designed soft concrete that will stop planes at the ends of runways. Had this airport had that and at least some area, it probably would have stopped the plane. Everyone was alive until that fireball.

Note Sungshan does not have specially made runway overun areas and has no overun areas really on either end of the runway. There is that road on one end which will destroy an aircraft while it splits into various parts . I think the other end has a wall?

This kind of system should be standard

sung shan has a wall on one end of the runway too ! And so does Kaohsiung. IN fact an Md82 was destroyed when it crash landed at Ktown and into the wall, but that plane did not catch fire and no one died.

here is the plane, i have been on that plane into Ktown (prior to this incident of course) B-28003

Cool, I didn’t know that

if it was a case of landing gear not coming down. then normally the runway can be foamed and firetrucks standing by at the end of the runway and the gear can be lowered manually too, they can be released and gravity can lower them and lock them. And perhaps most of the gas on board can be burned off before landing , etc. Many planes can not dump fuel in air. . And also a diversion to an airport with the longest runway would be in good order.

Problem is most pilots do not encounter a real emergency in decades of flying and without constant simulator training can panic and not be fully prepared to handle the emergency. Planes have become so automated and work so well that real emergencies are rare. Most pilots dont know how to properly handle a go around even. Where as in the past pilots had to actually take aircraft and do touch and goes in real time. Etc.

Point is emergencies are so rare now that many pilots panic and are not taking the best course of action. For example if engines are normal flaps can be deployed to max to slow the plane to lowest speed on touch down and reverse thrust can be used even with engine cowling on the ground.
Again not sure what happened here exactly . Except it appears the plane landed without its gear and over ran the runway.

NO expert here of course. Will have to see what the investigators have to say.
